I'm doing the Extended Project Qualification at College. It's researching, planning and then writing a 5000 word essay on any subject of your choice.

I'm doing:

"Is it of any benefit for Horse Owners to use Faecal Egg Counts as opposed to a Traditional Worming Program?


As part of my research I've designed a questionnaire for horse owners.

Done. I'm afraid I had a little rant about worming religiously instead of egg counting too. Asking for trouble (in the form of resistance) if you ask me.

I'm surprised any yard that has an inflicted worming programme hasn't gone over to egg counting. I wouldn't move to a yard that made me worm these days. I am happy egg counting. I am considering getting tape worm bloods done too so I don't have to worm for that unless required. I have become a bit of a zealot!
 
Yes, well my horse is out in winter for 3 -4 hours per day, but I had to put in two hours, as he is never 4-8 due to mud fever concerns.
I have moved yards, and now the YO has a worming schedule, I hope to convert her to EFC, but as it is he was due a compulsory Encysted and Tapeworm control, he got it [advised by wormers on line]
The less wormer the better, as prolonged use will lead to long term difficulties, and knowing the pharmaceutical companies, highly sophisticated and more expensive products.
Poo picking is unknown round here, no wheel barrow would be able to access the fields for a start!
 
Done - I am another that believes we should all be doing egg counts, mainly due to the ever increasing instances of anthelmintic resistance, however there is also a cost advantage (I've found egg counts are just over half the price of most wormers), and there has got to be some advantages to my horse by not giving her chemicals when she doesnt need them... Oh and theres always the fact that grabbing a bit of poo out of a stable is soooo much easier than worming for some people (although my mare is really very obliging when it comes to worming)

I have just had a worm count done from Westgate Labs, first time ever. So pleased I did, no eggs found!!!

Will worm for encysted red worm and tape worm in December and re worm count early next year.

Thank You everyone who has done it for me so far. I still need more questionaires filled in yet, so if you have the time it's very greatly appreciated!

I'm going to try and contact some specialists in Equine Parasitism as well, so I will post that for people as well after I have finished the project if people would like that?
