Looking for some advice please. I have recently wormed with eqvalan duo, active ingredient invermectin. Kills all but enc red-worm. Found lots of pinworm in poo.

Do I now need to change chemical group and worm for the redworm? If so, when?

Or, should I keep with eqvalan duo for a year, to try and knock this pinworm out and forget about worming for enc redworm.

I'm aware of resistance issues, hence the question. I have read spurious info on worm counts, which would not have shown the pinworm anyway .....

Horse is new to me and I am unaware of background.

Someone (forget who) suggested worming when there are frosts as freezing will kill worm eggs and help stop reinfection. Can anyone confirm this?

Interesting, thanks. I chose eqvalan duo as I have the dectomax injection and wanted to worm for tapeworm.

So any advice on what to do now please?

I'd definitely worm Dec/Jan for encysted redworm with Equest or Panacur 5-day - the Panacur will also treat pinworm.

Not sure why you would use Eqvalan duo for a year? It is a double drug wormer including the tapeworm dose. Using it all year would be really over worming. What you should do next is to use plain Equest or 5 day panacur to target encysted redworm. This would be used about 8-10 weeks after the Eqvalan. Incidentally you may have seen a few pinworm but ivermectin is not the best choice for pinworm and the problem will most likely re-occur.
Next year you should start on a testing programme using worm counts approx 3 monthly from spring and tapeworm tests 6 monthly. Only dose if you have to. Add a winter dose for any encysted reds. Use a sellotape test if you suspect pinworm or if you know it is there seek advice on treatment.

Eqvalan duo says on the box that it covers pinworm. It also contains praziquantel. I have seen lots in the poo and the horse has shown no outward sign, such as rubbing etc. using it for a year, was something I read on the Internet, might have been this site, so it's good that it is confirmed I don't have to do that.

Thankyou everyone in early jan I shall use the pancur 5 day, which covers the pinworm too, and then in March have counts done. Excellent.

Strongyle larvae can survive for months in snow and icy conditions.

Snow is actually a very good insulator so I can accept that. But frost is another thing. Unless insulated by snow, I find it difficult to believe that alternative freezing and thawing wouldn't kill them, also eggs. Grass can actually continue to grow under snow!
