My friend has got her cob back off loan to a riding school and he is in very poor condition. So first job we thought was to worm him. He is in a paddock of his own, poopicked religiously every day. To run with the rest of the yard on our plan we have double dosed pyratape p. Was poopicking last night in his field and found a massive tapeworm in his poo!! Next wormer on the plan is an ivermectin wormer which is due in may. Should we wait for that one or do him with something else?

She has tried to ring but no vets available at the min to have a word with her. I suppose at least we have to be thankful that the pyratape p has worked.

Hve a word with your vet,but a horse on our yard who had tapeworm was double dosed and then double dosed again two weeks later. Our yard has a good, regular worming programme and horse has been wormed regularly all his life (17 years).

Are you sure it's a tapeworm? If it is then the dose has done it's job at least.

Have you had a worm count done? If the horse is poor and has a massive burden then you need caution. You have made a start on any redworm burden, as well as treating tapeworm, with the wormer you gave, a good idea rather than trying to zap it all together.

In about 4 weeks the horse will be ready for plain Equest to treat all stages of redworm.
Worm count two weeks later to see that all is well, then again in about three months when the next wormer would be due. That will give you an idea of how things are going. Horses with worm problems usually need monitoring and correct dosing for a couple of years at least.

Should be back on track by then but any health worries do consult your vet.
