Just so fed up with trying to worm my horse !
Yesterday spent quite some time trying to get the syringe in his mouth and it’s just impossible - he flicks his head so quickly and backs up, the wormer just goes everywhere ! He is 16.2 so quite tall. I don’t have any help on the yard but I am a competent handler (Generally :) )Ended up putting wormer in his feed, it’s quite an aromatic feed mix but he wouldn’t eat it and £20 wormer ended up sprayed all over the floor !!
I have seen pictures where people put a carrot over the syringe but scared horse will simply bite the plastic syringe off?
Shall I try twitching him? Get the vet to sedate? Several strong man to pin him down? Any ideas anyone ? I despair !!

Polly is very dramatic- reverses and threatens to rear, head flings dramatically,
.. you’d think I was trying to beat her to death... I just stay really calm and at her shoulder best I can, accept I’m going to be there for a while and get her to the point that I can stroke her with the hand the wormer is in. I do this right up to her face until I can stroke her with the wormer on the Muzzle... she then usually realises it’s time to man up a bit and I can slip it in her mouth.
She then does big dramatic chewing and face pulling that are Oscar-worthy so I shove some sweets under her nose so she swallows it.
Takes a bit of time but we get there and she is improving every time.
She won’t eat it in a feed so I have to persevere.

The thicker wormers can get a bit stuck round the edges of the bit, so we give a small feed in after with the 'bit' in.

She's fine with syringes in her mouth if it doesn't have wormer in.

I can stroke his muzzle with the syringe and even begin to gently insert the tip in the corner of his mouth but at that point he swings his head up so quickly I don’t get that nanosecond to squirt it in, so frustrating :-(

Had some success with carrot, carrot, carrot, carrot, syringe........ if the carrot is cut in batons about the same size as the wormer, and poked into the mouth in the same way, and on the off-side also does help as already suggested. But then, I was only dealing with a 14.2hh!!
Also, very bizarre, had a YO tell me she could only worm her horse if she took off the headcollar and just did it either in the stable, or with the headcollar round his neck. I did try that with administering meds via syringe with a fussy mare and for whatever reason, it did work.

Give syringes full of apple sauce or custard for several days before worming, take it slowly till they realise it tastes good then one day fire in the wormer, works with mine!

Put a bridle on with the wormer ready in your pocket and just do it with an element of surprise, you just slide the worker in at the side above the bit, this has worked with a few tricky horses.

Or another way is get an empty syringe and fill it with something your horse likes, mine like Apple sauce custard or horse cough medicine the Lincoln one, let them smell it and taste it then put it in the mouth like you would a worker, just do this a few times at random times then just before you worm give them a yummy syringe then the wormer.

It is also easier if you have someone to help you then one can hold the horse and one administer wormer, a good tip is to tilt the head back and rub the throat gently to encourage them to swallow.
