Hi

A friend of mine has just aquired a section C welsh cob whos elderly owner recently passed away.
The horse was kept with a few sheep for company but no horses. Im looking for advice regarding a worming programme for him. Could he have caught anything from the sheep? Is there a broad spectrum wormer that will treat him for everything?
Thank you.

Hi, generally its a good thing to graze a horses field with sheep as they suffer different worm issues so the sheep actually help to break the worming cycle. Though this is obviously more successful if the horses and sheep are rotated in a field, not sure it would be as effectrive if the horses and the sheep are together...? I would suggest speaking to one of your local suppliers eg feed merchant or vet for their advice or go online and poke around. A suggestion might be starting with something like Equest, worming with Equitape in the Spring and Autumn (or Pramox). These wormers are quite cost effective as last for 12 weeks. It is done by the time of year and drug group but is quite a complex topic to be put on here. If you go onto Westgate Labs or Virbac website, they will have loads of information or maybe give them a call. Hope this helps.

I would recommend you get a worm count done first to see just wht/how many worms she is carrying. You may also want a blood test to check for Tapeworm, then take it from the results.
