in terms of worming im a complete beginner. my horse is in a field by herself i poo pick but im not perfect and its not a spotless field but its not bad.

can i get a free worm count done?

where do i get a worm count done?

what am i worming for?

when do i worm?

how do you worm a horse? eg is it in the food?

(im not a novice rider just a novice owner)

Firstly when was your horse last wormed and what was she wormed with? Presumably her old owners let you know that when you bought her, if not should be able to tell you.

You can only get a free worm count down if you buy particular wormers with this offer. Far better IMHO to use someone like Westgate Labs or Abbey Diagnostic to get a worm count done and then, depending on the outcome, worm. They will be able to help you with what wormer to use.

What is essential is that you worm for tapeworm sometime between now and November as they don't show up in worm counts. And we always worm after the first frost for all other worms including bots and encysted redworm.

A lot of people just put the worming paste directly into the horses mouth. We put it in the feed and other than Equest Pramox which ours hate find that the horses eat the food as normal without any problems.

There are many thoughts about when/how often you should worm. We worm count twice a year and then strategically worm twice a year to cover all of the above. We use Equest and Equitape as ours don't like the Pramox which does the same thing but must just taste completely different.

Basicaly worming these days you only want to worm if you need to and try not to do it as much.... because the worms are becoming resistant to the chemicals.

I would if I were you, call up these gusy'; http://www.westgatelabs.co.uk/

Get a worm count done and then they will advise what to worm and when (if you need to)

I would also make a better job of your poo picking as it might mean you don't have to worm at all, which would be great...

To sell wormers you have to be qualified. Find your local tack shop and see if they have an SQP (Suitable Qualified Person) to sell wormers. If they do the SQP will be able to help you sort out a worming programe. I'm an SQP and I help lots of people with sorting out their horses worming. It is a minefield so don't be afraid of asking them for help, it's their job! Good luck!
