My horses were worm counted back in Sept 2013, came back clear, were then wormed with Pramox in Dec 2013 - am I due to give another wormer or worm count soon? Sorry for the ignorance but I was at large yard before which handled all this for me but am now on my own and have no idea when next to worm.....?

I personally find Intelligent Worming's service very useful, each of my 5 horses all has their own programme which is constantly updated depending on results of worm counts and and any changes in the pasture management routine etc, all I have to worry about is taking the poo samples and sending them off, all the wormers and sampling kits each horse needs arrives in the post at the appropriate time. I believe Westgate labs also provide a similar service, but they don't sell wormers so you can source the recommended wormers through your chosen retailer.

do a worm count and go from there, I worm in spring and autumn and then worm count during the rest of the year. your worming in autumn will be for emerging encysted red worm which will hatch in spring and tapes and will cover other worms, so the pramox is good for this, spring time you need to worm for basically the same thing again, but if your horse gets an itchy tail during summer then worm with ivermectin it helps stop the biting flies and those that lay eggs on the legs and the horse licks when rubbing his face on his legs and then injests and so the cycle continues.

I use 'Wormers direct' worming calendar and they are really nice to speak to, no pressure and the cheapest wormers.

Ive been doing some research on this 'Intelligent Worming' company and their so called 'working partnership' with the Uni of Liverpool.
Apparently its a load of nonsense and the University has nothing to do with them.

I strategic worm with worm counts inbetween

I use plan from my vet as below

Jan-Feb Red worm/bots
Mar-Apr Tape
May-Aug Routine through grazing season (chemical changed on 3 yr rolling prog)
Sep-Oct Tape
Nov-Dec Red worm/bots

Do You poo-pick? How many horses share the field? How old is the horse? How many acres does he/she graze? You need to answer all of these questions before developing a worming programme. If the answer are Yes/grazes on his own /over 5 and below 20/ at least 1/2 acre; I would suggest worm egg count June & Sept. If greater than 400 eggs per gram worm (rotate between the three different wormer groups i.e. Panacur , Pyrantel, Ivermectin (don't use Equest for routine summer worming). In winter time i.e. December worm with a combination product with ivermectin/praziquantel (for tapeworm) unless the wecs have been high all summer; then consider using Equest pramox. If your horse grazes acidic soils i.e forestry / peat bogs etc. you may want to do tapeworm twice a year in autumn/spring. Your vet can do a blood sample to check for the probability of tapeworm colic issues.
