I went and bought a wormer (syringe type) totally forgetting my new pony is a pain to worm through a syringe! Any one found a way to get the wormer into a difficult pony and make sure they keep it down - he holds it in his mouth then spits it out!?

You need to grab his tongue, hold it out to the side (so he cannot bite you) and push the wormer down the back of his throat at the same time. This is the best way of worming a horse that I have found. Make sure your hand is dry to start with as it will be easier to hold onto a wet slimy tongue.

If he is a pony you stand more chance of doing this successfully, as he is sure to throw his head in the air. I struggle with my 17.1hh horse but still manage to do it.

One thing I would say, is that there is a evidence that horses are becoming resistant to wormers (in the same way we are becoming resistant to antibiotics) and its due to an overuse of wormers. Next time you want to worm dont. Instead buy a worm count testing kit, take a sample of poo and send it off to the lab. Nine times out of ten you will find the results come back to indicate your horse doesn't have a worm burden and therefore expensive wormers are not necessary and may well end up being counter productive.

Please don't do this, as pulling the tongue to the side can fracture the Hyoid!
