worms in horse water tanks

Today when I went out to fill 4 horse water tanks I found that 2 of them had worms in the water, know were earthworm size but not super small either, some had that band around there mid section and some didn't. They were all skinny though. How do worms get inside a water trough? Why did 2 of them not have any? Very strange. These are not the kind of worms that horses get, these are like the ones you see on the sidewalk when it rains a lot. It did rain all night here (Idaho). Does anyone know how this is happening? Any advice anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

We have this its from the birds. I came remember how I read up about it somewhere. We have lots of crows round us and find all sorts in the water!

so the birds are dropping the worms in the water? Maybe they are sitting on the edge of the water tank with a worm and want to get a drink and already have a worm in their mouth so they drop them. One of the water tanks water level with the worms was only about 1 inch and the other tank was about 3/4 full, the birds would have to land inside the tank into the 1 inch of water to drop the worm. Thank you for responding, that the best explanation that I've heard. Someone in my family actually suggested that the worms crawled up over the side of the water tank (these water tanks are roughly 3 feet high) I told them that you never see worms hanging out on the sides of really... well anything! I just looked at them and shook my head.
