Help - I thought I knew quite a bit about worming but reading through some details online im not so sure I do...

I have two horses, one which is 28 appaloosa and loses weight at this time of year normally, the other a 4 year old quarter horse which both seem to have lost weight recently. I put this down to worms and the colder weather however I only wormed them with Strongidp in August so I think it is too early to worm them again?
They have been between fields. One which is used in the summer, the other in the winter so I normally worm them when going into either. Not too sure what brand is a good one and what I do - double dose...? If now is too soon and what the effects are if I over dose..? I tend to feed granules but most recently used a paste in August...

I'm really not getting your post sorry. Are you saying that you only worm your horses twice a year?

i think your worming programme sounds a bit up the spout - it doesn't matter if you use paste or granules - what matters is what ingredient you use.

i only worm my horse twice a year but that is targetted worming for tapeworms and encysted redworms and the rest of the time he has clean worm counts so i know he's not carrying any worms.

Wonderful - much clearer thanks....

should have mentioned I got my 4 year old in August - hence worming him and my old mare at that point...prob does sound a bit up the spout after reading my question through again...! whoops

If they lose weight due to worms then it is probably too late for just a routine worming?! Have a worm count done to assess situation - otherwise intervals of worming depend on product - usually every 6-10 weeks (depending on brand) I guess unless otherwise advised ...

Rang my vet friend who has been down to see my horses. Looks like they are not losing weight due to worms and both are healthy. She has set me right on the worming bit and pieces. Also organising for tooth doctor to come and have a look at them.
Thanks everyone for your comments.

hmmmmmmmmm. I worm my horses with one of two broad spectrum paste/gel wormers every two months. I like combo care gel and Equimax.
Glad to see another Quarter horse owner on here!
