Worried about Rio

Thanks everyone. He’s just such a super, strong, active dog so it’s so disorientating to see him like this. He looks so small and vulnerable.

He’s getting steadier on his feet but you can see from his stance that it’s a Herculean effort.

I’m pleased he’s still here. Does he already have medication for his arthritis? If not it’s really worth exploring those options.

We’ve had him on yumove for a few years, when he started to show a bit of stiffness but I’ve considered it precautionary. He’s gone from right as rain to completely unable to stand overnight. My mother said he tripped yesterday and plonked his nose into the mud while they were walking. I’m wondering whether he jarred something.

Vet seems to think he’s in good health otherwise. Just wonky 😭

It’s so scary when they look neurological but everyone seems assured that it’s not a stroke or something like that, it’s purely a result of inflammation causing nerves to be impinged.

We have previcox and paracetamol now. It’s not going to be ideal for his kidneys but we will deal with acute situation first, stabilise and then think long term.

I just want to wind back the clock for him!

He's a beautiful dog, lovely photos! Do you think his difficulties could possibly be due to the drop in temperature yesterday / today? I hope he feels better soon. 🤞

Wonderful photos in #1, and #18, what a life he's had with you. Lovely to hear that he's at least still here for now.
He does look a bit unsteady/trying to find his own steadiness in your last photo, and of course it's not easy for you to see him like that, but you're trying to help him. And he's both standing, and able to go to the toilet. Give his body some time to recover with the help of the medication you're giving him, and fingers crossed, hopefully you will soon see some improvement.

He is so much better this morning! What a relief. We’ll keep him on the anti inflammatories until vet says we can try without.

Definitely possible. Something has changed for him, and the difficulty is knowing whether it’s just some trauma or whether it’s a new level of aging. Does he bounce back, or is this the new norm and he needs to stay medicated.

I am sorry to read about Rio' s health. Our arthritic lurcher bitch gets a monthly injection of Librela and is climbing the stairs again and showing no signs of pain. She also has kidney disease, well controlled at the moment. Perhaps worth discussing with the vet whether Librela might be suitable for Rio. It does not usually work immediately but it has been amazing for our girl.

Ps. Crossposted!

That is a lovely update. He obviously wants to move. Another here with a dog on librella with good results. It's worth asking about. I will keep my fingers crossed he continues to recover. He's very handsome x

Glad he's improving. He's such a gorgeous boy. He's so lucky to have such a wonderful owner, he definitely looks like he's gonna hang about for another good while, he looks so happy and healthy.

Little get well ear rubs his way.

I'm glad Rio has improved.
Another one recommending librela, it gave my 15 year old lab a new lease of life, as others have said there is no impact on their kidneys.

Sorry to hear Rio has hit a bad patch LG. Will keep everything crossed that you are able to find the right drugs to stabilise his quality of life for a time yet x

Another thumbs up for librella jab here, our old girl was starting to struggle to get up stairs - she was on it for 12 months before we lost her (not related) and it made a massive to her.

Librela was mentioned when discussing Bear today. I've read all the threads about it on here. However, he still runs round like a much younger dog, jumps on the sofa etc.

The sudden drop in temperature is probably affecting your boy. 15 is a great age for him! Does he sleep on a dog bed? Can you pad up any beds so no cold can seep up from floors? We've layered ours, memory foam, plus cage liners/blankets etc.

I didn’t have a positive experience with librela. JD became incontinent and very confused and distressed. I will never give the drug to any dog of mine again.
Its worth joining the Librela FB page before you make any decisions.

Thanks everyone, he is so much better. He is a bit more doddery than he was before this episode but he’s generally fine. He looks more like an old dog now - but he is one.

I’m so relieved but it is a realization that we really don’t have a huge amount of time with him. It’s a crushing reality and I don’t know how it’s a surprise because intellectually I know he’s a good age, but, emotionally, he’s still our puppy to me.

I’m the same with Bear, who’ll be 14 soon. Had a sleepless night because he was really unwell yesterday-proper ‘sick as a dog’, but got up to a rearing, lively, perfectly happy dog this morning. They’re such a worry.
