As some of you know I have two nearly one year old JRTs. They are brother and sister. Now Bunny, girl dog, is in her second season less than four months after the first and Mumble, boy dog, seems very distressed all the time.

He is shaking and whining and cant keep still and is constantly trying to get at her. We are keeping them separated when we are not there but he wont sleep at night - just sits at the door whining to go out to be with Bunny and during the day he sits next to me shaking and heavy breathing. He almost seems in pain.

We are going to get them both done but were waiting till Easter when someone can be with them all day. Would it be worth getting him done now - and would it make any difference and is it normal for him to be so distressed.

Any ideas or advice will be greatly appreciated.

I would get him done asap, or get a hormone jab for him (chemical castration, should work quite quickly), but you will still need to keep them apary whilst she is in season as he could still have live sperm lurking.

They way he is behaving is quite normal for a dog desperate to get to a bitch.

Unwanted puppies are bad enough but a mating between brother and sister would be a bad thing.

This is quite normal behaviour for a male, we used to have a stud dog who got in a terrible state if he knew if any of our bitches were in season. It would definitely be as well to get him castrated as soon as possible, though obviously it won't help him while she is in season this time. I have had quite good results with Rescue Remedy for dogs stressed by fireworks etc, it might be worth trying him on some. The spray is easiest to administer to dogs, just a couple of squirts on the tongue. It might just calm him down a bit. One another thing, you say you are planning on getting them both done at Easter. If your bitch is in season now your vet might prefer to wait a little longer before she is done. They usually like to spey midway between seasons, it would be worth checking with the vet before you book her in.

Our whippet dog used to get so agitated when our lurcher bitch came into season that the weight used to drop off him and we started to send him 'on holiday' to stay with my mum for 3 weeks. Typically, when it was the right time to have pups with him and the lurcher it turned out that she was impossible to mate

Oh - I wish I had somewhere to send him - even for a few days. He seems so upset and it worries me. Oh well - I will speak to the vets tomorrow and see if there is anything they can suggest.

I'd ask about her seasons too, it's not normal for their seasons to be so close together - even the first few.

You'll still need to keep them apart if you have him castrated - takes about 4months before he's safe!

Yes the vet has said her seasons are abnormal and suggested it could by a cystic ovary. We plan to have her neutered at Easter - we never intended having puppies anyway.
