Worried, am I doing it right?

ok, I have 2 wealings. I have a couple of fields and a buildings but, unfortunately they are not with my house. My house is a five minute drive away by car.
The 2 weanlings are in from dusk til dawn, they are fed at 7 am and turned out,another feed at noon,when they are groomed a bit, tied up ,feet picked out,lead etc, then turned out until its dusk , around 4.30 pm when they have feed number three and are then in for the night.
Should I be going to see them at ,say, 9pm? I suppose i should. when I lived at home our horses were always looked at at 9 pm before we went to bed.
My field and buildings have no electric and are quite remote rurally.
I really dont know what to do for the best. I just wish I had them at home.
Does anyone do up their horses at tea time and not visit til next day or is t just me dong it wrong?
 
Our 2 horses are 5 minutes drive from Mum's house on our own land. They are fed morning (about 8am) and evening (about 6-7pm). They are out 24/7. We have always done it this way. When there is good grass, they don't even get the morning feed - we just drive past to check them. Next door neighbours who overlook the land keep an eye on them too.
 
Well I would want to look at them later than 4.30, otherwise they will be left for about 15 hours. However I can see that it would not be easy for you to get to them after dark. Have you got a big dog? Could you take it for a walk to the stables? Ours are at home and are looked at before we go to bed, so it's much easier for us. You can only do what you can do and what you feel comfortable with.
 
i go in a morning - put out etc...

then sometimes i can bring in and leave her from 4.30 onwards... normalyl 6pm tbh but i never have any issues leaving them all night without a check

to be fair though im on a livery yard but the only way people would know if something is wrong is if she was thrashing about in the stable....

they get checked at 6am by YO...
 
I check mine once a day in the week and usually twice a day on the weekend - he is kept out 24/7. He is on a yard with 23 other horses though so I know that he is seen a few times a day by various people and that I would be contacted if there was anything wrong.

Is there anyone that can see on to the land and check them for you? If you had the space you could consider advertising for another horse to join them - that way you could share the duties and know that someone else is around to check them if you are unable to get to the yard at a certain time.
 
You find your own routine, we work four twelve hour shifts, could open our back door and see the horses, look out the window and see the horses. Sounds ideal but wasn't, we now have a cottage on a livery yard, we put the horses to bed about 6pm and thats it till 5 30 am, it only takes a second for anything to happen and people need to eat/rest as well, you have to have a balance to life, you cannot be there 24 hours so don't sweat the small stuff. Work out a routine that works for you and enjoy it
 
Mine is kept 35 minutes from home so i only got to the yard once a day, its a small diy yard but owner lives on site and checks the horses at 8.30pm when she lets the guard dogs onto the yard for the night, (they live in a stable during the day and can get into it at night, they have big beds and blankets in there for them, 2 rotties a 2 mastiffs)
 
I wouldn't worry too much. As long as you've left them with enough hay and water, I'm sure they'll be fine. After all, you could go and check them at 9pm and 5mins after you leave they could spill their water. You wouldn't know. If they did, they'd still be alive by morning! You need chill out time in the evenings too. x
 
Big Thankyou to everyone for the replies. Sorry, was just a bit paraniod last night,guess I could sense the bad weather coming!. They should be fine,they have loads (too much) hay left for them and plenty of water in 2 buckets so if they spill one theres another left. We can only do our best, TBH sometimes my husband goes and checks them late at night when he finishes his shift, so far he says they've been asleep and/or lay down and all hes done is disturb them. Guess I should stop worrying. Thanks one again.
 
i bring mine in then dont see until the morning but they are on a yard the owner lives at, she generally checks them about 9ish i think or atleast someone in her family does. mind you that stil leaves about 9hrs for them to do something but we cant watch them every minute of the day even if at home. i do think in ur shoes id take a quick drive to check them later
