also have contacted vet also just very worried in meantime, horse been treated for resp infection past couple of weeks , poss flare up of copd also , yellow discharge on abs incase bacterial , cough , no temp , however last night has large open scabs under his neck ,were you would get abcesses from strangles , but he has had his fly mast on since last week and wandering wheather that has rubbed also possibly but one is no were near the mask , i have never had any experince of starngles so unsure if thats what the abcesses start like ? was quite oozy this am xx

Wait for vet and see what he says. If your on a yard i should imagine you would have to keep your horse away from others and tell yard manager/owner asap.

We had it at our yard years ago but if I remember correctly it started off as lumps on the underside of where his head joins to his neck but I could be wrong. I think it then goes pussy and scabby after a few days. But good call on getting the vet as you can never be too safe with that horrid disease.

had it at previous livery yard. It started off with a mare who never went anywhere but she had a slight cough but no other visible signs for a few days. Then a discharge from her nostrils which went yellow. Owner thought perhaps she had managed to swallow something and get it stuck and called the vet who took bloods and mare had a high temperature. Instantly suspected strangles so yard put into lock down. No other horses had any signs at this point. Bloods came back and strangles was confirmed. Then within a few days of that a few other horses started to show signs. About 10 days to 2 wks later abscesses appeared on a few of them but not all of the horses got them despite having other signs ie raised temperature, slight cough, discharge from nose and some were off of food whereas others werent. I have to say from your description I would almost certainly suspect strangles

When my pony had strangles we thought it was an insect bite . She had no symptoms but a swelling under her jaw. vet confirmed strangles and said it would get bigger and burst and she might be quite poorly. It never did do anything just went down a month later . The pony was never ill or off colour. None of the others caught it before we found out about it . I hope you have a good outcome .
I think equines react differently to the virus, some show little sign like our little pony .

Well my horse got strangles and it started with him being down and having a high temperature , about 40.5 degrees c , then a huge lump under his chin that eventually burst after 3/4 weeks of him coughing and wheezing , if there is not temp I don't think It can be strangle ?? I would monitor him and keep checking temp
