My pony was freeze marked just over three weeks ago, it has been going scabby the past few days but was told it would....... However today it looks like this!

I'm going to show it to the small animal vets at work. I have been putting some soothing cream on it for last few days as it looked so scabby.

I cant remember mine looking like that, and im pretty sure by week 3 all the scabbing was off. The scabbed skin just kind of flaked off and then hair came in white, i never put anything on it as i was advised not to

I would pop a fly rug on him to keep the flies off (or use summer fly cream, but I'd rather the air could get to it) and leave it alone.

Ouch, my ones didn't look quite that raw either and he's a real sensitive skin type. It did scab over but by 3 weeks, the hair was starting to grow back in. Looks like they held the irons on a long time. I'm pretty pleased with my one as it was for loss of use and I really didnt want it visible if I could help it, luckily on my grey you can now barely see it ;)

I would stop using creams...it is likely that flies have irritated it, and they bring with them a host of little nasties, so by using any form of cream, you are creating a moist and stable environment for anything nasty to breed as the skin won't heal and they have plenty to feed on. Clean off any residual cream, apply a fly repellent with a cloth around the area (not on it) and I agree with above, pop a clean fly rug on. Check it daily and it should start to dry up and scab again in couple of day. if it doesn't, or you notice any changes, just get it checked.

It doesn't look too bad, just like a healthy scabby bit of skin that has been moistened with cream. Scabs are good...they are part of the natural healing, so unless they are trapping dirt, best leave them alone. Horses are amazing at healing themselves if we let them, so clean up as above and give it a few days to come right. :) xx

Thanks all, just to be safe I have vet coming out tomorrow. I'm a bit worried that marks have been held on too long and he's now just going to have pink marks rather than it growing back white!

It's the skin dying off, don't worry but if the flies are bothering him, put some fly spray round the scabs, but looking at the photo they look pretty healthy

I have had mine freezebranded and they didn't seem to notice it was done. when I have seen film of horses being hot branded they definitely noticed!!!!!!!!! that's why....

Hmmm; amazes me that people get all het up about hot branding, and then think freeze branding is fine........

I wouldn't have a pony freezebranded again. I have had several ponies hot branded, witnessed many and will hopefully continue to do so!!! None of mine were set on fire nor had a reaction like pictured due to a hot brand. Anyone wishing to see a proper form of hot branding is welcome to contact me and arrange a visit in the autumn.

We had 3 freezemarked on their backs earlier this year, 2 were fine and have grown white without problems but 1 went very sore and has stayed bald which is annoying as we paid extra for his name and he also suffered afterwards. He had to have a lot of time off and company dont seem bothered.

It does look as though the mark has been left on too long. This happened to one of mine and I never forgave myself.she did the first two and I thought they were on too long but when questioned she got uppity; should have thrown her off my yard.

I was told to spray salt water on to keep clean and harden up skin. In summer the mark is mostly bald but does get a couple of extra hairs in winter (8 yrs later ). Would never do it again on saddle area. Horse was off for 9 months as he was so sore and swollen. Still makes me angry to this day.
