Worried vaccine reaction

Evening my horse bad his booster last year and then couldn't move his neck took about three months to get him back right was horrible and very scary , he has having a routine check with vets tomoz for something unrelated so I am going to get his booster done a bit early , I am just worried sick about him having it xxx
 
If it was flu and Tet last year, then he should just be flu this year, and that is less likely to make them ill, so I am informed.

If not, then I would remind the vet of what happened last time, and I would choose the chest or bum for the shot.

It would probably be the safer option also ask for a few days of bute to give to reduce any inflammation, it may just have been a reaction to last years vaccine and cause no issues this year but if the vet is aware they can be extra careful injecting him.
 
Change the make of vaccine and never use that make again.

Most vaccine reactions are to the adjuvant (a 'come and get me' signal to the immune system) or the carrier fluid and not to the virus itself.

I'm surprised that your vet hasn't told you this. I had a horse who reacted terribly to one and was done the next year with a different one.
 
I have a horse that reacts and a fantastic vet who has tried everything to avoid it without any luck. Last year we resulted to giving her a high dose of Bute the day before and for 7 days after.
 
I have one that reacts. We changed the make of vaccine and touch wood have now found one her body hates. Her temperature record is 107.5F, it's only the fact she keeps eating that gets her through it. (That and an insane dose of danilon!)
 
I had a terrible experience last month with annual booster, well - my sensitive mare did.

She sweated up that eve under her rug, it was a still night but her rugging was no different than usual.

Next day she couldn't get down to her feed bucket for breakfast without going on her knees. I had to raise all feed and water for her to head height for 3 x days and keep her on bute to ease the pain. She was evidently more stiff to the right where she had had the injection.

It did clear by day 4 and she's right as rain now. She came to me over a year ago but previous owners had let her injections lapse so I had to do the 3 x jags in a row/year and no effects then so this was a shock.

It could have been bruising as she was terrified of the vet I think because he had such a strong smell of meth and possibly cattle from previous visit so she did bounce around a bit. However, the sweating up that night makes me think there was a reaction of other sorts too.

Interested to follow this post for experience of others

My awful experience (in previous msg) was with flu only - as the vet forgot the tet that day (didn't have the combined) and came back few days later to give the tet (to add insult to injury in her sorry state.....)
 
Make sure any reactions are reported to the drug company
You can call them and report by phone
Or fill in form on vmd website

Can you not do a titre test to see if a vacc is needed?

My mare reacted to her first vaccination. I asked for a different brand the next time and vet gave me some bute to adminster beforehand. She was fine for the subsequent abs.
 
I have one who need to have a anti inflammatory jab on the day and danilon for the next few days it completely solve some the issue .
