Jed has decided that the grass is greener on the other, other, side of the fence!

He jumped out of his field into the next geldings field (we have two seperate gelding fields) the other day when he was on his own, so i just put it down to loanlyness.

Last night he decided to jump into the geldings field next door then out of there and into the mares field. The electric fence is 4ft high so i know he can jump.

The problem is, when i went to get him in from the mares field he had his willy in full swing and was chasing after one of the mares and nearly didnt let me catch him which is very rare. When i put him back in his own field he wouldnt stop looking at her and calling to her.

I have always thought he may have been cut late due to his bolshyness (if thats even a word) and his sheer build, but he's never acted like this around a mare.

Do you think i have a problem? Have any of you witnessed anything like this before?

There used to be a gelding in the field with my mare who was very 'amorous' with her, he wasn't gelded until he was 5.

Oh that is late. Ive had him since he was 3 so i know he wasn't that late. Maybe he wasnt doen properly and he still has something floating about up there!

Both the geldings next door are very interested in my mare when she is in season, one of them acts like a stallion (he was gelded when he was 2) and the TB gets his willy out even though he wasnt gelded late.

Mind you, my mare does back up to the fence with her hind legs apart and tail on one side so that she is in optimum position if one of them obliges!!!!!

He's been in the same field (rotated between two) for the last 7 years or so and the mares have always been in site. So why now would he start to be interested now?

I dont think he likes his field friend's much, could this be the reason?

It's a lot more common than you think that some geldings just like the ladies. Even my elderly, ploddy boy that you could have had a picnic on top of, fell in love with a pretty little (tart!) cob mare and was spotted doing her a favour (ahem) in the field one day! You can usually tell the difference between a true rig and a besotted gelding coz rigs tend to be very stallionish all the time. Besotted geldings usually just sort of grab the opportunity if it comes along but are still their normal selves if you see what I mean. You can have a blood test done to check for a retained testicle but I seem to remember reading that it's not always conclusive. Take care coz you could be facing a whopping claim for damages if your ned gets a mare preggers!

A gelding at my yard has taken a shine to my husbands (very tartish) cob mare- he follows aroud every where and tries to herd her around- she doesnt help though, sometimes shes very obliging, other times she boots the hell out him ( what a woman!!)
