So Robin had the required time off and I clambered aboard on Saturday. A very quiet walk down the road with 2 buddies, they carried on and we came back. Then Sunday another quiet walk but down the back track and back. Very well behaved and happy horse. Allowed myself to be slightly optimistic.

Rain yesterday so didn’t ride. Rain again today. However he came in very grumpy. He is not a grumpy horse. Threatened to bite twice. Really really not him. First time I literally said “hey” and he flew to back of stable as if I had walloped him. He has never been walloped by me. I softened myself and asked him back and he didn’t want to. I went to him to stroke him. Just generally unhappy.

He ate his tea then settled to eat his hay. Reports back later that he had pooed and was eating hay.

I am really worried his hocks are hurting again. The steroids had definitely helped but if they have only lasted 2 weeks this is not good.

Could he have ulcers due to pain? Or am I reading in to it too much? See how he is tomorrow? He will occasionally have the odd ears back but he is not a grumpy horse. He was however miserable before I had the vet back and then he went on Danilon prior to the xrays.

Plan was tomorrow for a light ride. Obviously if he is still unhappy I won’t.

I don’t know Robin of course but could he just be grumpy because of the rain? Mine comes in fuming if there’s been heavy rain and is much jumpier as things look different. Or if it’s been one day - bullied by a field mate? Something scary in the field? Had a gallop round and is a bit muscle sore? It’s so tricky when we’ve got no idea what mischief they’re getting up to out of sight!
For peace of mind why don’t you trot him up tomorrow if he’s still unhappy and video it to see if there’s anything obvious. For reference the physio thought my horse was 0.5/10 lame a week after injections (mild hock arthritis), expected to improve with work but it was still just about noticeable then.

I’d give him a few more days before starting to worry. I had a really grumpy day last week for no particular reason other than I was a bit tired and it was cold. I was fine the next day after a sleep and when the sun came out.

Despite being in ireland...my horses hate it when it rains all day and night and i notice they’re definitely pis*ed off! maybe the cooler wetter weather is causing his hocks to hurt more than normal?
