worst falls?

My worst fall was probaly doing my first ever dressage comp, horse i was on fly bucked/reared/generally being a tit. I came flying off the side, landed flat on my back in the middle of the school, much to everyones amusement. Found out 3 months later i had fractured my spine.

Seriously, why do we do it? :D

First time hunting, ridiculously fast pace, terrible stride to a tiger trap, brakes went on... why oh why did I put both hands out infront if me?! Instinct for sure but resulted in 8 broken fingers and a broken scaphoid. As per another poster, drinking tea through a straw was odd! Still got 2 wonky fingers 15 years on!

Riding holiday, posing for photo's at Tarr Steps, not paying attention, hot day, horse laid down for a watery roll. Only a twisted ankle from getting foot stuck in stirrup but was absolutely terrified as hooves were flailing around inches from my face and I couldn't move anywhere. Horsey was fine.

I've been so lucky reading all these posts, some brave H&H'ers!!

Worst was the bolting accident, however I didn't actually fall off, so that doesn't count.

I've had 2 bad falls, first resulted in trip to A&E.

First was at an RS, there was a 15hh cob called Toby, who was renound for his bucking fits. Anywho I was asked to ride him, all was well. 10 minutes before the lesson was going to end, I just thought one more canter. He spooked at something and tanked around and around fly bucking. I came shooting off the saddle backwards, fell through the first 2 beams of fencing, then bounced of the last beam and headbutted the ground. Result was whiplash and very bad brusing to my back.

Second was a different RS, Was riding a very forward little jumping Pony. We were doing no stirup work and I popped him behind another Horse in the hope it would settle him a little. Wrong!!! changed rein and he saw a space infront of him. He tanked and then tripped, I flew over his head, the landing itself didn't hurt it was the fact that he then trampled me. He kicked me in the back, trod on my belly and trod on my leg. Luckily it wasn't my head. Got my breath back and got back on though. But my back still plays up now.

Sadly, I have had several! Once I was riding work, and the horse hit a soft spot on the gallop, and literally turned over. Stood right on the bottom of my hat (how lucky was I!!) and on my back. Was badly bruised and seriously concussed, with a slice outof the side of my hat, and serious scuff marks on the BP, but was alright after a couple of weeks.
Then same horse threw itself into some sheep wire, turned over and dislocated my shoulder, was off for about a week with that.
Had a horse slip over when it was rearing, and break my leg.
My worst however, was probably in January. Was riding work on a horse, and the tack slipped under its belly, someone else had tacked it up, and the girth was too long, I hit the deck very hard, ended up in A+E with a suspected broken neck and pelvis, and on a drip for concussion. Was nearly all day before I could even vaguely stand up without falling over. I am still having major problems with my neck, and am awaiting the results of a CT scan, to see if the long term damage is serious.

At 16 - trying to squeeze through a little gap between two metal posts. Got too close to one so tried to lean over and lift my leg over it but banged my stirrup on the post which made Flame jump. Because I wasn't sat up in the saddle, I just fell off and I must have put my hand down first because I broke it hitting the tarmac. I spent a week in hospital before they could operate and pin it because it was so enormously swollen. I now have a missing knuckle on my left hand where the bone was repaired shorter, which I think is epic. :D

At about 23 - Having a difference of opinion with Arch, my old gelding about whether or not we were going to jump over some straw bales. We got to them at virtually a standstill and I thought he'd refused. Then he cat-leapt in the air onto the bales, banked them and cat-leapt off again. I did the splits coming off and fractured my pubic bone.

At about 28 - Two nasty falls of a pycho mare. Once she'd bolted in the school and was pinballing about off the fences. I mis-judged her plans at one fence and went sailing into it. Broken ribs. The other time we were on the lunge. She went to p!ss off, which was her thing, and the person lunging tried keeping hold. She just dropped me, hard, on my coccyx. Never had it x-rayed but it hurt like **** and I can't sit on a bike seat for long anymore.

Horse decided to bronco two fields. Pulled in and grumped at her, at which point she noticed a ditch a few metres away, sat down spun into the woods, flattened herself just under a tree branch which was going to take me off however much I ducked, so bailed as I hit the tree, bounced off the tree and landed on a private property sign :o

No damage to the surprise of rider out with me. Fine to get back on and back to the yard... getting off again was painful though!

Never injured riding... I have a metal plate from leading though and can't for the life of me work out how I broke!

Mine was 3 days afer I finished my GCSEs luckily, (or unluckily depnding on your point of view!) Was warming up at pony club and my pony was getting a bit excited so I took him of to a quiet area of the field to work him in and the grass there was quite long and it was on a bit of a slope. As we cantered in a circle we suddenly came across a pallet that had been dumped there. He jumped sideways, down the slope to avoid it, his legs went from underneath him, I landed on the pallet, he landed on top of me. As he scrabbled back up, he kicked me in the face and stood on my arm, the pallet somehow got stuck on his girth, so it threw me up and flung me back down and he was cantering round the field with a pallet attached to him. I detached 90% of the tendon from the muscle in my left arm (I'm left handed) was lucky it didn't go all the way through or would have to had surgery and (stop reading now if you're squeamish)...

...detached my nostril from my face. It was just flapping around as I breathed. I didn't even notice my arm for about 2 minutes as my nose was bothering me so much!

That was nearly 20 years ago and I still haev a massive lump of scar tissue in my arm. Luckily no scar on my face though.

Nothing too serious compared to everyone else. My daughter first pony was very unpredictable, I had lunged her the day before - perfect. I put her on the lunge the next day and I could sense the pony was working up to something so took daugher off the pony and really made it work, it was bucking and flinging itself all over.
I said to my hubby when it had calmed down, I'll just get on and walk it round to cool off. Off I went down the field only for it to turn and set off at a mad gallop throwing a huge buck, I landed on my back, smacked my head and broke four teeth and cracked a rib.
Best thing was my daughter came up saying "that was great mum, do it again!", er I don't think so !

Wow... some of these are downright scary! :o

My worst was about 6mths ago. Took 4yr old pone for a hack out alone (which he'd done loads of times before). We got to about 5mins away from the yard and he'd been a total star. I put him into a few strides of trot, he's trotting along looking in all the hedgerows incase there's any scary monsters in there. He suddenly realises he's FAR too close to the drain on the road and throws himself out into the road. He then realises there's another drain the other side and throws himself back. A few ping-pongs later he takes off while launching himself into the air. I try to hang on but it doesn't work, by the time I come off he's in a pretty fast canter.

I was wearing a hoodie and cargoes, with my sleeves rolled up. I hit the ground and skidded a way down the road. I skinned the length from my elbow upto the inside of my wrist on my left arm, put a hole in my right middle finger, shredded by cargoes, skinned my left knee and damaged the ligaments in that knee. Never known pain like it. Ever.
