WORST HORSE EVER

Just a thought what is the worst horse you have come across and was the problem solved by either yourself or someone you know. A friend once bought a palamino called tasha they were so excited of their purchase who was sold as a 14 year old . he looked very well built but in all the wrong areas, he turned out to be nearer 20 suceeded in knocking the owner out on a main road in hand, they moved yards to work him more he would stop buck GRUNT then rear and if the rider stayed on he would climb a bank then rear over backwards to definitely get the rider off , one day on a long ride he turned around without thought and bolted in the opposite direction and stop once the rider was off, it turned out this horse had been owned by the whole nation nearly and had done the same with the other owners he was eventually sold to a dealer who bought him knowing what he was like in favour of the owners life who was 15 years old , as i had encouraged the owner not to sell through the paper just in case another little girl was about to be thrilled with her new purchase , we all like the pallis as they are such a lovely colour and we feel lucky to have one, but when it all turns bad we give our horses time to settle and get used to their new home . I must admit I have NEVER heard a horse grunt before it chucks you off , and his mouth was as hard as a rock. I look back now with my gained experience knowing even now I would not like to challange this horse or risk my life trying to make things better especially when he was as old as he was maybe things would have been different if he was 5 ish or younger . have you any stories and what happened to the horse in question DID YOU FIX IT X
 
There is a post about this in NL. Horrible story, but i'm interested to know what the dealer did with horse? You said your friend sold him to the dealer so that no one else got hurt - but that is exactly what would have happened! The dealer would have sold the horse on to someone else - like you say it had already been owned by half the country. IMO the responsible thing would have been to PTS. A confirmed bolter and rearer (esp one that is willing to go over) is VERY dangerous.

I used to ride a pony at a riding school nearly 30 years ago who was psychotic.

His favourite trick was to canter up to a jump, stop, drop his shoulder and sidestep - the rider would be decked on top of the jump, never in front of, or on the other side of, but right on top of the jump (did this to me - wrecked my back, another woman had her nose broken, a girl "couldn't walk for a week" after he did it to her) on a lesson one time he tried this trick but the girl didn't fall off - the look on his face was priceless, he couldn't believe it! so he did the same thing again, and again she hung on, third time, same thing, the instructor was shouting to the girl to sit up and kick [which she did], he stopped again, and again she hung on, next time the instructor ran behind him whacking him with a whip - he stopped again and the girl still stuck on, you could see this look of utter fury on his face (ears pinned grinding his teeth) so he threw himself on the floor and tried to roll on the rider.

He decked me once while I was cantering him on the flat - no idea what happened, we were cantering along, I blinked and when I opened my eyes I was flat on my back.

Another trick he learnt was to do something over a jump, then bunny hop till he got to the corner of the school, where he'd throw a buck and slam dunk the rider off the wall (did this to me, and I heard he did it to at least one other rider.

His worst "trick" was out in the back field, he'd trot along tugging on the bit, then he'd gallop flat out under a tree that just happened to have a branch at the rider's chest height, he'd come galloping out from under the tree and the rider would get whipped off by the branch (I saw him do this to one person and heard he'd done it to someone else).

They continued to use him on lessons and he continued to deck his riders on a regular basis.

Last I heard of him he'd died from colic. Can't say I cried.
 
I agree with saddlesore. They would have sold the pony on and probably doped or starved it to sell the poor thing.
If something is that determined to get a rider off there is usually something wrong with it (usually back or mental problem). Poor thing.
I have had a terrible pony. Poor thing went through a lot of medical problems making him scared of every one. Instead of running away though he thought he would use his weight and try to kick people, bronco buck you off or anything to get away from you. I got to the point were I didn't want to go near my pony. However, I struggled on sent him away to Gary witherford who does natural horsemanship. sorted out his medical problems and now he is the best pony ever.

Yes I agree, but Im sure other people had given him all the understanding possible and at this point it was the owners decision not mine , after just spending lots of money he had to get something back to rebuy another one for his daughter x
 
I wonder why riding schools do keep these sort of horses and keep watching customers come off. and why do they do it in the first place , what makes a horse so naughty are these the ones that would best be suited as trick ponys'???????? I guess some horses just dont want to be riden after all I wouldn't would you ???

I used to wonder why they kept that pony, problem was the instructor blamed everything on the rider - even tho it was obvious it was the pony who was being a bastard! I suppose nowadays his behaviour would be blamed on his teeth/back/saddle or something, but I genuinely believe he was an evil git, he did the same thing to so many people there was no way it could be anything else. I rode him once many years later after I'd sold my own pony and I was very "demanding" ie when I used my legs it meant go, not lean as if you're going to go, and he seemed to respect me much better than he ever had back in the old days. He was probably bored, or found it beneath his dignity to be ridden as a riding school pony. I don't know where he came from but he was a rather classy showy looking bay hack type ... if I came across a horse somewhere like that these days I'd be reporting the school to someone, it's a wonder that git didn't kill or seriously maim someone!
 
some are evil. very few, and most were made that way by handling imho, but some are evil/unrideable, and therefore shouldn't be. not worth risking crippling someone. what's the point?
my friend was teaching someone recently on their own horse, it did a dirty last minute stop at a small easy jump, girl went flying through the air towards the jump, horse swung sideways and gave her both barrels in midair (in the head iirc), my friend said it looked totally deliberate. girl was okay but very shaken, obv.
if that was mine it would have gone straight to the hunt, no question, evil b**tard. life's too short to try to work through it with horses like that. there are plenty of nice ones that go to heaven every day...
contrast with 1 in had in to break last year, 3 yr old, never put a foot wrong. bona fide saint. was with me 2 weeks and went home safe and easy to hack out from then on. a few months later out hacking a helicopter landed in the field beside where his owner was hacking him (3 1/2 yr old!!) and he didn't bat an eyelid...!
or, my first homebred, who, in the 13 years i had her, eventing up to 2* and BD up to Medium, the worst thing she ever thought of to do was to stiffen her ribs slightly against the leg for a few strides! i sold her as a dressage schoolmistress and she's never put a foot wrong to this day. (chestnut mare, too!)
so, that would be worst horse ever, compared with best horses i've ever come across! that's why i won't bother risking my neck or anyone else's with a b**tard any more...
 
I believe it was Lester Piggott who once said of a horse "nothing wrong with him that a bit of lead in his ear wouldn't fix"

when asked which ear he replied "don't matter, so long as you put it there with a shotgun!"

often used to say that about that fecker of a pony!
 
None of my own horses have been what I would term as bad enough to go here! There is only one horse which crosses my mind which I rode as part of my Uni's riding team. It was at the yard where we trained, was only about 15hh I think, anglo arab sort of looking thing. It was lovely to handle and to ride in walk and trot but go into canter and this thing just went full pelt (think a slow gallop) round the edge of the school - you just could not stop this thing or turn it. To stop, you basically had to try and turn it into a wall or into the corner! It was well known for doing this every single time. But it wasnt freaking out when it did it, it just did it as if it felt that was what was required! They had tried numerous bits (it was in a hackamore when I rode it) and apparently had had everything checked. Its always worried me since if this horse is still at the riding school. It clearly had issues which I wish I could try and fix!
 
worst one i had was a TB mare who was an absolute diamond on the ground,my then 11 year old used to lead her in from the field and she would just amble along beside her.However when you got on her it was a completely different ballgame,.She started off by spinning round and legging it back the way she came every few strides,if that didn't work she would bronc.A very experienced friend of mine started riding her and the horse got to the point where she would throw herself on the floor to get rid of the rider.
Afraid to say i would have fixed the horse OP is talking about with a bullet.
 
This has been very interesting, thanks for all stories, some may be in pain its hard to tell , some are just evil which is rare, and some may be unusually inteligent and want more from life. I rescued an ex race horse who was going to slaughter on the monday morning and I bought her on the sunday night (post dated cheques as i had no money) she has turned out to be the most sweetest and bright hard working llittle lady and has a wonderful life at my friends yard as an escort horse with dressage and showjumping thrown in . She deserved her life and would never hurt anyone , 20 years now still going strong , still goes like lightning though but thats not her fault just her past career, long live Lucy
 
I used to ride a section B at a Riding school. He was brilliant, then one day he just flipped his lid when we were half way through a dressage test, walking across the diagonal on a long rein, crossed x and BOOM! He was checked for back teeth & saddle which all were fine.
Riding school decided he'd just had enough of being a riding school pony. he was put out to grass for a year and then brought back into work and sold. Last I heard he was doing really well as a kids pony. He was lucky, i think in a different yard he wouldn't have had the opportunity of a year out. he was nine when he was turned out so still had lots left.
