Reading the thread about near-fatal horsey incidents has made me curious about people's horse-related injuries! Just how battered and bruised are we?

Mine is a 'shoulder rotated cuff' injury, which happened when I was riding alone in the summer. The horse I was riding approached a jump at 100mph and cat-leapt over it, and I pinged out the side door as we landed. I remember feeling a sharp pain in my shoulder, and was a bit winded, but otherwise got back on and jumped it again (because I'm bloody-minded like that). However as soon as I got back on I realised that it was agony to use my right arm. I could hardly move it and there was a hard lump the size of an egg on my shoulder. 6 months and 2 A&E trips (since I'm registered with a Dr in Birmingham but was living elsewhere at the time) passed. At first the Dr thought I had fractured my upper arm bone, but nothing showed up on the x-rays. The 2nd A&E expedition Dr then told me that I had a frozen shoulder and that the hard lump was just swelling (despite it being rock solid). Dissatisfied & still with the lump 7 months after the accident happened, I eventually went to see my own Dr in Birmingham who had told me that one of the muscles in my shoulder has torn and that I will need surgery but may never regain a fully functioning arm - eek! :o

So there's my essay, what are your injury excapades?

Shattered elbow, hit it at high speed on the top bit of a fence post...that was a year off and in total about 5 months in plaster - 2 operations and weekly X-rays for months...barrel of laughs that was, but fair play to the team as I have full mobility now and no repercussions apart from a fairly neat scar down left arm, which was not initially the likely prognosis!

I dislocated my knee while out hacking; a horse galloping (bolting),toward us on a narrow path crashed into my leg. Luckily I didn't fall off. I had to ride a mile to get to a road. Fortuously the nearest house was inhabited by a retired doc who suggested leaving the jods on as a splint and recommended hospital ASAP. A&E didn't believe I rode with it dislocated.
Leg still isnt straight and have damaged a tendon in the knee. Was back on horse within 24 hrs of having the cast off.

LETS GO!

left wrist-more sprains than I care to imagine from falling off.
right wrist-fracture & sprains
left shoulder-rotator cuff tear, tendonitis & impingement after dislocating (ongoing!!)
left knee-cartilage chipped off tendon damage after a pony slammed me into a tree and another one fell on me.
left ankle-dislocated twice, damaged from the fall.
right ankle-dislocated 3 times, damaged from the fall.
toes (numerous)-broken-my big toe nails grow half way then fall off (YUMMY!)
back-spine compressed 3cm after my pony fell on me.
nose-broken
head-DAMAGED!!! Still get on them!

*edited* I should add i'm really hypermobile so my joints just seem to pop in & out all the time & my tendons are all a bit lax! :)

Broke my toe walking up the stairs about a year before I started working with horses and have rebroken it more times than I can remember :p did something to the tendon in the arch of my foot when I slipped in the mud and was dragged by my lovely mare and sprained my elbow really badly once but been pretty lucky really but I dont ride so no falls ect

Two broken ribs, Slipped disc, and a fracture on my spine above my pelvice :D

although i cant ride any more due to other problems...and the slipped disc :(

but i am known to hop on every now and again! but now i drive.

My old horse chucked me off and i dislocated and seperated my shoulder. Not only did the shoulder come out of the joint but the whole joint moved about 3 inches away from my collar bone.... OUCH!

Dislocated knee after a gelding at my old work tryed to drag me over a stable door. He grabbed me by my upper arm as i was going in the stable next door.

The whole thing was a bit surreal tbh as once he dropped me i remember looking at my leg and thinking hmm that looks odd straightening it and popping my knee back!! then the mare whos stable i'd been going into pushed her door open and wondered off towards the stallion so i had to get up and chase her - adrenalin is a wonderfull thing - to top it all off i was 13weeks pregnant so wasn't allowed to take anything but paracetamol :(

It's still not quite right now as i can't kneel on it or bend it completly
