Reading the thread about near-fatal horsey incidents has made me curious about people's horse-related injuries! Just how battered and bruised are we?
Mine is a 'shoulder rotated cuff' injury, which happened when I was riding alone in the summer. The horse I was riding approached a jump at 100mph and cat-leapt over it, and I pinged out the side door as we landed. I remember feeling a sharp pain in my shoulder, and was a bit winded, but otherwise got back on and jumped it again (because I'm bloody-minded like that). However as soon as I got back on I realised that it was agony to use my right arm. I could hardly move it and there was a hard lump the size of an egg on my shoulder. 6 months and 2 A&E trips (since I'm registered with a Dr in Birmingham but was living elsewhere at the time) passed. At first the Dr thought I had fractured my upper arm bone, but nothing showed up on the x-rays. The 2nd A&E expedition Dr then told me that I had a frozen shoulder and that the hard lump was just swelling (despite it being rock solid). Dissatisfied & still with the lump 7 months after the accident happened, I eventually went to see my own Dr in Birmingham who had told me that one of the muscles in my shoulder has torn and that I will need surgery but may never regain a fully functioning arm - eek!
So there's my essay, what are your injury excapades?
