Just out of curiosity what is the worst accident/injury you've had either around your horses or riding them? Mine would have to be when I fell off my old horse about 5 years ago and broke my vertebrae and now have metal plating in my back and yesterday I fell off my youngster at a Hunter Trial and broke my leg in 3 places :o . So just wondering what other people's experiences are, I can't be the only clumsy one out there :p

My worst hasn't been too bad thankfully: fell off a 'new' (to the RS) 15.2hh into a rustic with filler. The spare cups hadn't been removed though (should have realised myself and asked for them to be taken away - never mind). Long story short, the horse refused, and I landed arse first on the jump cup, tearing myself a new one. (A hole about 3inches wide, two inches deep). Funny thing was, I'd no idea I'd done it until someone shouted a few minutes later "YOU'RE BLEEDING!!!!" Endorphins are wonderful things 80)

No bikini modelling career for me now though! lol. I'll spare you the photos - people said it looked like I'd been shot!

Ive been quite lucky, haven't had a serious injury 'yet' *touches wood*. But a few years ago when i was in the school, i came of one of the horses and got a nice big scrape from my a$$ to my shoulder. ( that was when i thought it was ok to do flat work without a body protector )

I cought a double barrel kick to the head last Sunday- luckily natural reflex must have taken over as the last thing I remember is 2 shiney shoes coming at my face!

It was a freak accident he was trying to get away after i lost balance loading and he stayed with me bless him, xrays were clear so wound glued and a few days concussion and I am well and lesson learnt loud and clear- wear a hat when loading! I WAS VERY LUCKY!!! :o

Week on have giant scab which I don't want to pull off in my riding hat - so no riding:(

Here a picture after hospital

Oh good god that sounds horrific (I'll spare you, the "that's a pain in the a*s" joke ;) lol). Do you have any problems now or is it just cosmetic damage? Sounds horribly painful though!!

Ohh noo hope you heal soon!!

I fell off a freinds pony i was breaking in, not that i remember it about a month ago....

Bruised a bone in my neck causing the ligaments in my neck to be inflamed, was lucky not to fracture it apparently :/ and in a neck brace for ages :( and also have a nice crack through my scaphoid and was knocked out well on repeat for about 10hours i dont remember the day or night before and what happened or being taken in ambulance and having the fast response vechile ohh and a very fit doctor apparently :( do not remember lol! first thing i remember was being taken down to mri scan and then in my ward :/ unfortunatley in hospital for a whole week!! and getting depressed about everyone doing things for me :(

When I was young a stupid, I got kicked square in the chest which knocked me out cold from being winded, lucky only bruised ribs.
I've also fell off a couple of years ago, and shattered my ankle, that fixed and I came off again and sprained the other ankle, I've learnt not to land on my feet any more lol

Lights fused, spooked and span left, his head hit my face, his head much harder than my face, cheekbone broken in four places, NHS had me in and fixed within a week and I'm told that titanium plates in your face are fine!!!???

Wow - cannot imagine the pain!!!

Not me but a woman at my old yard. She was coming out the stable, the horse spooked, she tripped trapping her leg in the open door and then horse kicked the door against her leg. Luckily me and my friend were down at the time so we rang an ambulance. The stable door had shattered her entire leg she had to spend 8 months in a wheel chair and sell her beloved horse :( but from what iv heard shes fine now this was a few years ago

JH: lol. Got a few of those jokes, but surprisingly it didn't hurt. The only thing that I didn't like was having to get two sets of stiches as the trainee doctor screwed up the first. He did 7, the nurse looked horrified when she went to dress it, so senior A&E doc came, took those 7 out and put his own 12 in with partially worn off lidocaine. OUCH! Only being able to sleep on one side was the worst part of it (and not riding for about a month of course).

The damage is purely cosmetic thankfully - have a 3inch long scar that's in a divit, with cross-marks from the stiches, perfectly in the curve of a rusty metal jump cup! lol. Have put links to the pics so that anyone squeamish doesn't have to see them. My backside isn't on show though: just a narrowly cropped pic of the scar.

Rotten luck about the leg at least it's a good excuse to spend loads of time on here.
Horse injurys to date
broken back, twice
Broken hip
Tibia plateau fracture with the tibia broken into numerous pieces required 5 years of surgery to fix including having the hip I broke warier replaced as it wore out because I was on crutches so long with it taking all the wieght it gave up not good hope yours fixes easily and you are soon out and about again.
Oh if your heels get sore with you lying in the same position get a sheepskin rug ( cheap at Argos ) and put your feet on it solves the problem.

Bearing in mind this spans over thirty years lost a toe broken back both arms all ribs both collar bones leg twice stitches in bum and belly been knocked out many times and had a chuck taken out of my head the minor ones broken nose three times lots of black eyes and cuts and brusies. Now iv wrote this down someone explain to me why i have horses again

didn't happen to me but one of the younger staff members was forking up the muck heap, as she gave the fork a backward swing another person jumped up on the muck heap and impaled themselves through the arm with the fork!

VVD the picture of the breeches- OMG :eek::eek:

Nice neat scar though- have (not too graphic ;)) images of you kneeling on the trolley in A&E! ;)

 might have been a shorter list if you listed the injuries you haven't had yet  but on a serious note, sounds nasty!!

Fractured spine (T11 and T12), cracked pelvis, dislocated shoulder, 2 broken ribs - all from the same fall off a 13.2 pony. How embarrassing. Much to the consultants annoyance, the first thing I asked when he told me the extent of the damage was "but when can I ride again??!". He said 6 months until I would be up to it, but I was back in the saddle after 8 weeks for a plod round the arena.
I've had broken ribs and a broken foot courtesy of a huge ill mannered mare that crushed me against the wall and trod on me when she was in season and caught a whiff of the YOs stallion.
Oh and not serious, just very cute - a very neat perfect hoof shaped bruise just above my knee from a mini shetland foal!

My worst riding accident by far would be in September 2003 when riding a veteran friends pony who spooked by a bird flying out off the trees beside the school, I was only a novice at the time so couldnt hold on with a bolting pony and the bucking that came with it and so a broken shoulder followed. I had to have am operation that consisted of 1 plate, 1 rod, 8 screws, 16 stitches, 2 blood transfusions, a lovely 8 inch scar for life and the best bit of all a whole year without doing PE or dance at school LOL!!

Came off whilst trotting bareback, I broke my scaphiod bone however the hospital didn't realise and cast my arm in an aircast, this caused the bone to set wonky, it then had to be rebroken and set correctly. The result of this was 16 weeks in a plaster cast, whilst I was doing my Gcse's so I had to learn to write with my left hand.

This is all because I rode without a neck strap

I have had 2. first one, I fell off, broke my pelvis and pubic bone. Not too sure how, but it took the hospital 10 months to spot all of the breaks, they kept telling me I was badly bruised! Err...hello!!!
18 months ago got hit by a car whilst riding, broke my back and have rods and pins now holding me together. I had also broken the head of my shin bone which took amny xrays and eventually an mri to see!

Not me but the daughter - got striding wrong into a fence & pony plowed it & fell over onto her. She broke her right collar bone & completely smashed her left thumb so nothing serious except she had both arms in slings!!! It was awkward explaining what had happened to school & helping her go to the toilet (she was 13 at the time!!) She got fed up after a week in 2 slings so the hand got put in a splint instead :D!!

stoopid me last year was forking up taz's bed and i stabbed my self straight in the foot, i had a hole that went through the side of my foot to the top and i had chipped a couple of bones and tore a few ligaments on the way :o oucchh i was wearing leather riding boots too nice hole in them too :o

broken my wrist
lots of broken fingers and toes
tore 3 ligaments in my knee and 5 in my ankle
and had a hairline fracture of my ankle too :o

it's crazy reading all the injuries that we've received whilst looking after our beautiful horses, some times it makes me think how I/we would be a lot safer/healthier without them (?) but for some strange reason just can't live without them! Literally can't live with and def can't live without...:)

Mine was as a kid in the riding school's Christmas jumping comp - was riding one of the school ponies who, when the bell went, took off like a thing possessed and galloped round and round the arena flying the odd jump as it took his fancy while my mother screamed in the background :D

Eventually I came off and landed in a heap - 3 broken ribs and a greenstick fracture in my right arm - ouch! Still, sounds nothing compared to what some of you have endured!!

My worst must be breaking the same set if ribs three times in three months from the same horse! The last one was horrific and he was broncing on top of me on the road after getting his girth stuck on a gate when he tried to push though, then panic set in. Was very lucky to come away with lots of bruising, concession, heamitoners (sp?) Ill thank my long boots for saving my legs, lovely shoe prints though them.

Another one I got bucked off into a huge patch of nettles, pony knew just where to dump me. Now I'm really sentive to strings.

But the worst one I've seen is a livery beening kicked in the face and dragged when lunging, rope wrapped her hand.
Well she had the lower half her face hanging off!

mine havent been too bad and *touch wood* i havent had a fall or injury for a while.

my first fall, i broke my foot but the hospital didnt spot it. 3 weeks later it had ballooned again and was clicking as i walked!

my second fall, was stretchered off on a spinal board and neck brace after falling off over a practice fence at XC course. i stupidly wasnt wearing a body protector and landed flat on my back on rock solid ground. since then, me and everyone at the yard wear them. i was drugged to the eyeballs for a week as all my muscles were in spasm and i had whiplash and concussion.

my third fall, landed on my head on the school fence after being dumped by a youngster - yet another trip to A&E but was ok, concussed but ok.

im dreading winter because thats when i really hurt myself slipping over on ice on the yard!

You sound like a medical miracle!

I once fell off a horse and landed with my neck on the top of the fece and apparently i was lucky i didn't break it but just was extremely stiff for a few weeks and bruising. i get broken toes frequently and often a bruised crushed leg but nothing too bad.
