worst injuries you've had around horses

gosh some of these sound absolutely horrific! Im a little nervous about whats in store for the future for me now!! Ive been really lucky so far worst injury was ripping some ligaments in my ankle after doing my instinctive annoying trait of landing on my feet when falling off! That was only a couple of wks on crutches (and weeks of bareback/stirrupless riding!), reading some of these makes me realise how lucky I am; Ive even got away with a rotational fall with just some very severe bruising. Kudos to the NHS for managing to patch you lot up!! :D

35 years with horses = every finger broken at least once; LOTS of serious bangs and bruises; broken ankle (NOT the horses fault - he slipped on ice, but it was a 12 mile hack home.....), and worst one: kicked in the face, dislocated and broken jaw.

My funniest off horse accident was leading my brother over a clear round at local pony club rally then tripping over the 1st jump (very embarrassing)! :o

I had a pretty nasty fall when I was about 12, a young section D of mine whom was spooked, doctors were amazed I did not break anything, my being a little chunky helped my bones :D
I still have a couple of weird lumps in my left arm, left side of my jaw and the left upper front to my thigh, it always has a funny pins and needles type feeling, think I upset the nerves very badly there, was 18yrs ago now. You cannot see these lumps and bumps fortunately, can feel them though

I fractured my nose and fractured my coccyx in more recent years, neither my girls fault bless her. She went to jump a log from a standstill and fractured my nose, had rather nasty concussion for a week.
The coccyx was a flight reaction, i was walking her in hand and my friends mare took off and my girl also tried to them take off, kicking out in the process, I already had a slipped disc so my poor back is not the best.

I have heard of others having much worse injuries though, metal plates and all sorts, ouch!

May-ish (I think!) 2011: Dizz slipped on the road, resulted in a cracked and chipped bone (didn't realise for a week)

September 2011: a fast canter, she went left, I didn't... Luckily I was wearing a hat  (the lighter coloured sweeping shape at the bottom left shouldn't be there )

July 2010: rode when I was ill. And jumped. And came off and broke my back at L2

Sorry! Having a photo sizing issue...

Was riding a horse at work (racehorse) who I absolutly hated, I'm pretty sure she hated me too! She tried to jump off before I or the rest of the string were ready so I pulled her back and she retaliated by throwing her head up and launching into the back if another horse. Other horse bucked and kicked out, whacking my knee in the process. I said "arghhhh!!!" and then we jumped off so I stood up as normal and thought, actually I'm
okay so carried on. Got to the top and sat back down so bent my knee and thought, wait no, that hurts! Walking back down assistant trainer asks what happened so I told him I got kicked and he said "ah ... yeah I can see where he got you" so then I rode the horse home and when I got back I went to the office where the first aided was. I told her I was fine as it wasn't hurting and that I'd just sign the accident book and go back to
work. Then she told me I had blood on my jeans (I was wearing jodhpurs AND jeans!) so off came the jeans, pulled up my jods to show her my "fine" knee, to be greeted with the sight of my kneecap ... My knee had split right open and you could see the bone. So I got carted off to hospital and had some stitches put in then 3weeks off work.

Not the worst accident that anyones ever had, but that's mine :)

Good god, these sound awful

The worst I've ever had was breaking my nose. I knelt down next to a shetland and he smashed his jaw bone onto my nose! It's all wonky now, and it bloody hurt :p

I feel a wimp compared to all of you

dare I ask what the lighter shading on the scan is? I hope it was nothing too awful !

Whoa Mrs Mozart: what a time of it! That bruise is amazing. Assume the sweep hasn't had any lasting effects.

All the broken bones have set my teeth on edge: glad you all seem to be fine and have gone back to horses despite the accidents!

Yes, I've a surprisingly neat scar all in all, not that anyone except my OH sees it! I was sat on a trolley, knees to my chest and had no less than 6 strangers examine my backside. Sexy! lol. Was just glad I wasn't wearing apple catchers, otherwise they'd have cut my undies off - that would have been much more embarassing! No one can believe that I didn't notice it and had zero pain relief for it when they see the jods: just lidocaine for stitches about 4hrs after it happened.

VVD - that sounds so painful lass!:o You must be made of stern stuff

My arm didn't hurt until I sorted of twisted it round one day, then I screamed. That hurt.

My head has taken some time, but it's getting there ta :D

My back hurt for a while, but I was lucky, it wasn't as painful as most I've heard about. I didn't know that was broken for two days

Cracked ribs, and an undiagnosed collapsing lung, shortly followed by a complete and total mental and physical breakdown, due to pain and stress. I lost my job, my house, everything I cared about. Lesson learnt! Some H&Hers are COMPLETE liars! It took me 18 months or so to get my life back together, and now it looks like I have CFS/some sort of fibromyaliga caused in part by the accident. I wouldnt wish this on my worst enemy! and all I did was take on a poor sodding horse that was in a really bad place, same the sodding owner couldnt tell the truth about what she'd done to him! :(

I'm currently sporting some lovely skin grafts on my leg, had the normal broken bones, knocked out etc but this one is a freak injury. New horse, had two weeks just a baby (4) hacking him out he spooked nothing bad but I was caught offguard he bucked and I rolled off, made the mistake of trying to hold on to him, he panic and trampled me. Crushing me leg, anyway off to hospital no broken bones but kept in for four days with suspected compartment syndrome and let home after the four days with a large bruised leg but none the worse for it - well here it starts to unfold.....!!! Develop a large blister about 10 x 10cm on back of damaged calf area , looks horrid, go back to A&E they say oh that's a fracture blister and rate to see them with no broken bones, it cause by tramadol to tissue. Anyhow they drain in and send me on my way...!!! Over next week my calf area turns a deadly shade of black, like it's rotten , id been attending GP daily for bandage changes as blister area was leaking fluids ... Anyhow to cut the story short turns out the tissue on the back if my leg is dead , just had operation to remove tissue on Thursday last week , they had to cut quite alot away , they have also done skin grafts over the area, I will need to go back for reconstructive surgery at a later date. What a mess from just some bruising, I was freaking out thinking I had MSRA. Have a look

Arrggg bleeding iPhone , ignore some of the random words in my post above, I hope it still makes sense, my iPhone stuck random words in and I never noticed. Grrrrrr

Spinal injury aged five (can't quite remember what but spent maaany months in a sort of plaster bed), nice kick in the face a few years later ... A few falls on the way :-) Even managed to break a couple of fingers without even falling off!

I'm lucky I have had no serious injuries.

When I was 7 or 8 my Welsh pony bucked me off in the school and kicked me - I had insisted on wearing my brand new body protector that day just because I could, good job as one foot went into the chest leaving a dent in the BP and the other went into my knee. I got a chipped bone for my trouble.

The next one was off of a shetland I was breaking in when I was 15. She was called Ira, so we called her Bomber ... sorry I know! I know! Not the best idea but hell! She could torpedo you! She was quite nervous but you could ride her anywhere side saddle - leg either side and drop lead ropes and stuff down the other side. I sat astride on her and she just exploded. I wrapped the legs round (no stirrups - can't be faffed with worrying about them when I am on a rodeo show) Got half way down the field when she took 3 canter strides - my mind went "Yes! I have cracked the bucking!" 2 seconds later she cannoned me out of the saddle. I went 10ft in the air - yes from a shetland! Landed on my head, crashed onto my back and skiied 15m along the ground and wrapped round a fence post. It was a good job the fence post was there else I was going into the burn and I can't swim! I was also out for the count for 5 mins. 3 days imobile and 5 days concussion and I was right as rain again. Only bruising.

The final lucky escape was from a racehorse called Simple. He blind bolted down the gallops, twisted this way and that and I lost my stirrups. Couldn't stop this thing for love nor money. I couldn't tell you if there was any traffic on the road or not I was too focused on trying to stop. He went to turn for home, I slipped - being in waterproofs on a synthetic saddle in the pouring rain - came down, my legs tangled in his back legs and I had half a tonne of horse on my as we skidded across the road from full pelt gallop. We came away with cuts and scrapes - and a shredded 1/4 sheet, girth, saddle, jackets, trousers, chaps, hat silk. and skin on my pelvis. That was when I was 16 and had only been working there for 3 months - my mother still doesn't know about that one - I doubt she would have let me go back to work if she knew about it at the time :D

I've had very lucky escapes. I would hate to imagine how much damage I may had done - never did go to hospital to get checked out for the last 2. Ooops!

I have to say, apart from the one eejit, the racehorses are the sanest horses I have ever ridden.

To be honest i thought i done quite well with injuries considering horses iv handled and ridden. Dont feel so smug now. My family have always said i can hurt myself in a padded cell im beginning to believe them. considering some of my friends have had far more serious injuries than me one in a wheelchair one got both back feet in her face lost nose everything real mess still class myself as lucky

I used to work with arab racehorses ... one morning whilst training at Southport beach my horse tripped, fell over on top of me, I got my foot stuck in the stirrup and he dragging me half way down the beach at a full blown gallop - I "woke up" in Southport Hospital and still to this day dont even remember him tripping never mind the aftermath! Yet apparently I was fully awake/talking to everyone all the way to hospital? Funny isnt it how the body blocks things out??

Hmm not too bad compared with most of you guys

Mine was before I got George, I fell off one of the riding school horses who refused a jump and I went flying over her head and somehow landed on my back across the poles  Somehow I got back on and just walked a bit before getting off, untacking and driving home! When I got home I had to ring my OH who was indoors as I couldn't get out of the car  Trip to hospital and I'd broken 2 ribs in my back and cracked my pelvis - ooops!

Luckier than my husband, who, on his 4th lesson, at a BHS school, on a suitable horse went from trot to walk - it was raining and his feet slipped out of the stirrups. He fell off landing on his feet.. but he didn't bend his knees. He got back on the horse and finished the lesson as he wasn't in any pain- we then went north to visit his family. He woke early next morning literally screaming in agony. I dialled 999 - ambulance took him to local hospital where he was x-rayed and found to have compression fractured 3 vertebrae (they call them the parachutists injury). He was in hospital for 4-5 days whilst they had to wait for the delivery of a full body brace. He wasn't allowed to stand or move in that time, being "log rolled" around his bed and having to pee in a bottle. Once the brace was on he had several months of me driving him to and from work (he was self employed at the time). He's since sat on my horse a few times - but his back is too painful still to ride more than a few minutes.

Me, I've had broken fingers, numerous bruises, bumps, cuts and scrapes... but still wouldn't not have a horse in my life, I tell you we must all be mad!
