Today i was off to a fun show with my loan horse and the owner who brought her grandchildren along.
the lorry was making noises but we thought nothing of it, about 15 minutes into our journey the lorry started swerving, we pulled over to find the nut bolts had been loosened on the tyres. we managed to get to a garage safely and after waiting for 2 hours for recovery who told us that all the bolts had been loosened on each wheel.

neither i or the owner knew of this, or even anything to do with mechanics. The thought of the wheels coming off scares me. 3 horses and 5 people could of been killed from someone tampering with the lorry in revenge or steal the tyre ( unlikely as the lorry is a 7.5t but could be ) the lorry is kept in a safe yard but anyone could of easily accessed the yard after the last person had left. i hope nobody ever has to experience this in their lorry or even in a car. i will defiantly be checking the lorry's wheels and my on cars more often now!

I am sure ROG or someone more knowledgeable will come along and explain why it can happen without any human involvement, the wheel nuts do potentially come loose and should be checked regularly, I learnt this because my, new to me at the time, had damage due to the nuts being loose, the holes became ovals rather than round and the wheels were moving about on the axles, a very expensive start to owning it, you can get markers put on to make it easy to visually check which is what I believe commercial transporters use to make it a quick and easy way to see before each journey.

I hope it was this and not sabotage and pleased that you got home safely.

I would second the markers, I have them on my wagon. Wheel nuts can come undone all on their own, but I would not think on all of the wheels simultaneously! Not unless you have just had the vehicle serviced and they took all of the wheels off and did not tighten them back up?

I would have the wheel nuts with the markers, but also check check tightness every time I travelled. I would also report to the Police. Without further information they cannot "do" anything, but at least there would be a record.

I would also consider CCTV.

I am glad for you that there was no accident.

i will recommend markers to the owner and reporting this to the police as we have had "unwanted guests" on our yard in the past! I'm so glad that no accident happened, and despite the horses being stuck in the lorry for 4 hours, also being a pain loading, where very happy to be home :)
