I've been thinnking that Shadow has been a bit ‘lacking’ recently, and her engine and spark has just gone without an apparent cause. I eventually put this down to perhaps being a bit anaemic so sent mum off to pick up some propel and vit/min supplements to sort her out, and have planned in dentist, physio, then saddler and dentist. Well things took a bit of turn this weekend, and I had Richard (vet) out for the third time this weekend on Monday Morning.

On Monday last week, we were schooling and there was no engine at all, even when the jumps came out there was nothing, so packed it in quite early. Our little ride on Wednesday seemed MUCH perkier and I was thinking maybe we’re getting it back together now and thought I should relax. Thursday night she had a snotty nose which smelt a fair bit and a wet bed, which I put down to her being brought in early, but she hadn’t been.

On Friday she was struggling to breath properly, so out came uncle Richard, and following a great deal of oral examination (which she took a dislike to with a lot of running backwards!), a raised heart rate, respiratory and fever, she got a course of anti-inflammatories, bute and anti-biotics. I was fretting the whole weekend, she wasn’t improving, and her throat was swelling down her jaw and she was getting stiff with it. On Sunday she was barely even trying to eat – not like her at all! Her temperature was 102.6 degrees, her heart rate was sky high and her breathing very very laboured. So I called the vet, trying to hold back the tears – seriously the noise she was making was horrendous and all she was doing was trying to breath

Poor uncle Richard came out again, we did a scope into her larynx and gutteral pouches, no sign of infection, just very squashed from the swelling outside of her windpipes. Last night she had an emergency tracheaocotomy (no idea how to spell that!) so she now has a little tube sticking out of her neck so that she can breathe without restriction, and I’ve been very good and dealt with all the blood and puss and everything with no-one there but me and the vet! She is now on 2 types of intravenous anti-biotics, and uncle Richard is coming out daily for this. I had him out at 11am Monday morning and he was very pleased with her progress, there has been minimal swelling overnight, she’s adapted to the tube, and we seem to be on top of the infection. I have had to raise her hay up off the floor so that she can reach without discomfort and she seems very tired as she is fighting a lot of infection and dealing with a LOT of drugs.

now that the swelling has started to come down, we've found a lump that we're concerned may be strangles

someone stop me crying! fortunately she's responding brilliantly to everything else, and she seemed to rediscover her appetite last night and her tube came out this morning.

she's 28 and been at the yard for 2.5 years, we've had a couple of horses arrive at the yard in recent months, one from ireland (3 weeks ago), one from a riding school (only 10 days ago) and one that's moved on already after being sold who was kept in a very poor state before they could get to us.

i am just dreading being the black sheep - we've not told the yard owner until we know whats happening for certain (she is NOT the type you want to wind up unnecessarily!), but i feel like i'm fobbing everyone off, and every single person has been so kind and supportive for us.

the vet is hopeful that it is not strangles, and the abscess is related to something else - massivest ever vibes please

oh, and well done for getting this far!!

Errrm may be me, but I think you should have told the YO that the it may be a case of suspected strangles so precautions were put in place for the sake of the other horses ... if I was a livery there I would be furious

Hope she is better soon

I hope she gets the all clear, but have to agree with Zigzag. You really must make everyone aware so they can take precautions. If a horse on my yard had suspected stangles and no-one told me I would be very angry.

ewll thats what i'm worried about, but equally, i dont want to start a fire for no reason... i dont know what to do. whilst the abscess is intact she's not infectious so we're waiting for the results tomrrow morning and keeping fingers crossed. i thnk whatever i do i'm playing with fire.

Sorry i have to agree, even if it is only suspected (and fingers crossed for you that it's not) the YO has a right to know, I'm afraid I think you should tell her, especially if there are other horses coming and going. Sorry.

she currently doesnt have a snotty nose, and it wasnt ever to the standard you would expect.

2 horse will be coming in 2 weeks, which will give me enough time if i find out tomorrow, and no one has handed in notices or planning any shows.

i promise i'm trying to be responsible. i dont want ot start fires, and i want to be up front as much as possible.. but because it could be that dredded word.... oh i jut dont know. i'm following the vets advise on keeping quiet until we know but my morals are torn!

Oh goodness what a time of it you've had!! I really hope she pulls through and shes not got strangles..... I do have to agree with the others though the yard NEED TO KNOW. You never know when/if that abcess may burst. protect the other horses and tell YO asap....

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((VIBES))))))))))))))))

If the vet has recommended keeping quiet then i suppose he doesnt really thing its strangles? Hope it isnt- but if it is then i guess you'll have to be bearer of bad news. Poor horsey hope everything works out ok.

Loads of Vibes & (((((HUGS))))) to you.

However I agree with the others, you must tell the yard owner & put precautions in until you know for sure.
When Spider went in for his first scope, he didn't have the classic symptoms & I thought he had something stuck in his throat. We didn't suspect Strangles at all. Once we'd scoped & seen the absess, strangles became a possibility, although it still seemed unlikely given he'd not been anywhere.
Our yard was quarenteened from the moment he went back. Everyone cancelled their lessons & shows for the following weekend - just in case.
It was a good job we did as it turned out positive & we were then quarenteened for 3 months until we got the all clear

Having been through it I hope it isn't, but you need to act as though it is until you know for sure.
Everything crossed for you.

If your yard owner had anything about them they would have automatically put things into action as soon as that lump was found; even before if I'm honest. In a yard situation you can't be too careful, particularly when new horses are on and off the yard like yoyoes. I think it's time they became more aware of what's going on at their yard.
Have to say I am amazed at your vet re keeping quiet. Surely far better to be a false alarm and have everyone prepared than leave it until too late and it's been spread all about by people visiting sick horse then going on to their own?

Speaking from experience of Strangles, you HAVE to inform everyone on your yard. It is not fair for them to be kept in the dark of this potentially life threatening virus.

Some kind soul brought this infection onto the yard I keep my two horses on, one of them contracted it. She then moved away with said infected horse (he was a carrier not a sufferer) and no doubt infected others.

My horse suffered, my pocket suffered and I suffered. If I ever come across this person again she'll get a significant piece of my mind. I'm not cross that it happend as I'm sure she didnt intend to infect him, I'm cross she kept quiet about it for so long, thus delaying the diagnosis.

I really do hope yours does not have strangles, but you need to be pro-active for the sake of the rest of the yard.

That sounds really nasty, hope your horse gets better soon.

Re possible strangles - with so much around all Livery Yards should have a quarentine policy, it isn't fair to the existing liveries if a new horse brings in an infection, and it very much sounds as though this might have happened.

If I was running a livery yard I would jolly well make sure that any suspect horse was kept separate, and if necessary had swabs taken, or whatever the vet decides to do. Otherwise there is a risk of shutting down the whole yard.

I've only had one animal with strangles, that was years ago, and guess where it came from - Ireland.

Sorry I have to agree with the others on this one. Even if it is only "suspected" strangles the YO and the liveries have a right to know. I would be absolutely livid if I found out someone had deliberately kept this information from me and put my horse at unnecessary risk. Please do tell the YO and liveries ASAP!!!!

Fingers crossed Shadow gets the all clear but I still feel it is better to be safe rather than sorry.
