My 3yo has had two lots of respiratory infections this summer after a horse in for schooling brought a bug with her - the first time he was just turned out for two weeks; last time he had 10 days of antibiotics. He's never really had a temperature but was very quiet by his standards. Coughed a bit the first time, not at all the second time.

He's now been back in work three weeks, and when worked moderately (30 mins in school with three or four short canters on each rein, followed by a 20 min walk along the bridleway) he has been getting a snotty nose. After cleaning his nose, the discharge does not reappear. Is he just still clearing out the debris or is the bug coming back at him?
In which case is it worth a blood test?

He goes out every day unless the weather is grim; he's pretty chirpy at the moment, despite the mild weather, so seems to be feeling OK in himself!

Could your hay be a little dusty???
If he is on hay I would try soaking it for a while and maybe by some cough tincture like or buy some stable spray seen here spray it round the stable bedding and any surfaces see how it goes ,http://equinecare-and-control.weebly.com/a.html

and this cough mixture http://www.equimins-online.com/cgi-..._Air_Power_Booster_Cough_Mixture.html#aP6#aP6

Also I would monitor him if he is no better within the week I would get bloods done, it could be the virus hasnt gone or their could be a secondary one harboring.

If his breathing is ok and he is not getting too tired then I wouldn't worry too much.

My last horse had RAO and I found as long as he was clearing his system he was fine, it was when he stopped that problems arouse. Might be worth getting a bottle of NAF respirator just to help him clear it out. FAB STUFF
