Was actually really scared today.

Middle aged woman in a 4x4 came hurtling down road this morning whilst me and my mate were riding up it.

I have never seen anyone drive so bloody fast when approaching horses and I stuck my arm out made the sign for her to slow down but without success.

My horse is mostly alright with traffic although she will have the odd spook/panic and I really thought this was going to be one of those days.

It made my blood boil that someone could be so mindless and I just wondered whether it is actually worth reporting to the Police? Will they actually do anything about it?

Was tempted to throw my whip at her car!!!

did you have hi-viz on? did she slow down when she saw you?
if you have her registration number, you can mention it to the Police and ask them to ask her to approach horses more slowly in future as you were genuinely terrified for your own and your horses' safety, worth a try.

I would report it. My sister and I were once out together on 2 very sensible ride & drive horses, when an idiot screeched up to us swerved, making an horrendous noise in some gravel which made both horses jump (almost unheard of) then set off again and did it all again. This was on a no-through road leading to a bridleway. We found which house the car went to and reported it the police. They came to the house and took statements. We later found out that the driver had been charged with driving without due care and attention.

PLEASE report it!
i had a friend whos horse was killed when a car didnt slow down or stop when the rider at the back signalled them to, the horse at the front had been clipped by a van - who drove off, so he was very ipset, riders asked the following car to stop and she didnt, resulting in a horrendous mess you wouldnt wish on anyone. PLEASE report it so if she can be found, she can be told to respect riders signals!

Absolutely must report. A horse got hit close to where I live fairly recently and was badly injured because of some reckless driver. She should be taught a lesson - if only by a police officer giving her a lecture. How else will she know that what she did is unacceptable? Some people are so thick-skinned when they get behind the wheel of a car.

You can report it, and they will notify the local beat officer of where car is registered to - whilst no crime has been committed they can't exactly go all guns blazing, but a few words of wisdom should help :-)

I think a crime has been commited when I did my stages I'm sure it was against the law to overtake/pass a horse faster than 15mph although I did this some years ago I will hold my hands up and already apologise if this isnt the law now

Even if no crime has been committed (as there was no accident I dont think there was?) but I would report it anyway. Some idiot on a tractor started being really abusive to a few girls off my yard (one riding my horse) and ignored their requests to slow down. They reported him and it turned out he was not taxed or insured-if he hadnt been such an idiot then he never would have got caught. Hopefully learnt his lesson now!

It's only worth reporting if you have the registration of the car, make / model / colour and a brief description of the driver.

Without all or most of the above nothing can be done about it.

Yes it is worth reporting even if you only know the colour of the car. Ask the police for an incident number so that you know it has been logged.

When hacking out always wear a Hi-Viz long sleeved jacket so that drivers can see your hand signals.

If you want to stop a car coming towards you then point at the car driver for 3 seconds and then put up the palm of your hand. The same applies to a car behind you.

Also take the BHS road safety course as this will give you some additional skill when riding on the roads.
