the horse next door to me is a relatively new arrival and has only just started to come in. To get into my horses stable I need to be close to it as the doors are right next to one another.
In the past week it has bitten me three times- its a big horse so its teeth are about level with my face! Its not broken the skin but twice got my on the shoulder, and one just got my jacket. I am not having this and tonight when it bit me I hit it a hard slap and shouted no, the person standing with me looked horrified as if I shouldnt have hit the horse.

Maybe I shouldnt have slapped it and should of spoken to the owner (which I will do anyway) but it was a gut reaction and if my horse bit someone i wouldnt mind if they did the same.

What would you have done in this situation?

the same as you. plus, i'd get the bloody thing moved or put a grille across its stable before it bites you again. i knew of a hunt horse that bit a groom at the top of her arm and broke her humerus with its teeth... biting is not a minor problem. if it's frightened enough of you to not try to bite you again, good. i'd take a metal pole along next time and block yourself with that... not hit the horse with it, i hasten to make clear, but make sure it connects with that, not with your flesh.

My horse can be grumpy and he does bite, I wouldnt be happy if someone punched him lol but a smack on the nose has never killed any horse, so thats what Id expect people to do - and of course excercise some caution and dont mill around by him for no reason lol
ETA that he is at the quiet end of the stable so he doesnt get a lot of traffic. If he was in the busy part I would have him oved as you cant really help but pass then..

I do hope you didn't hurt the poor horse with your bony hard shoulder.
Perhaps you should stay out of its territory...or crawl underneath its biting range?
Have you tried reasoning with it? After all, 'violence is never the answer'.
And of course, there's always Parelli.
Just trying to help, as ever

I would of slapped it too, though not on the face (not saying you did hit it on the face btw).
We have a horse at work that goes for you when you put rugs on etc he knows he will get told off if he makes contact with me so rarely does. He has once properly got me and he knew straight away he shouldn't of done as he quickly reversed away from me.

Yes, I would discipline the horse that bit me. I have been in this situation, I am left with an ugly lump of scar tissues on my arm and she damn well got a slap for it.

Coming from someone who has a biter may I just add, that he has been slapped, punched, shouted at and more or less terrified (not all at once - god dont want people thinking Im part of that serial horse beaters clique!)
..... and yes he still bites. So if anyone knows of the magic cure please let me know...

the magic cure is this:
a sponge, a baked potato fresh out of the oven (very hot) on a stick. put sponge next to your skin to protect it, tape potato stick to arm, put a big shirt on.
walk near bitey horse, invitingly putting big lump near his nose.
wait for him to sink his teeth into boiling hot spud.
i have never had to do this yet, mind you, but i can believe it works like a flippin charm!

personally i would have given it a smack straight away! biting is not on!

twig occasionally tries to nip when i girth her up - even though i do it gently and hole at a time - i put this down to her being a bit tickly and mardy and theres nothing i can do to make it more comforatable for her so she gets a little smack on the nose when she tries!

is this your horse or not? maybe it has done it to others? if so, i would consider asking for a grill to be put up..

Harry bit me once - i bit him back and he hasn't done it since lol
Monty nips still, i have tried most things with him but he still does it - typical 2yr old pony - doesn't like doing what i ask it!

I wallop him for the fun of it!!! Jokes, he's not that bad, he's never bitten me, but I know hes bitten Aimz and she told him off!

Re. the original post, I dont think you did anything out of turn, Horses are big animals, and they can be dangerous if they get out of control. My colt used to try and bite all the time. In the end I use to carry a dandy brush with me and fight him off with that, not hit him but block him with it. Also used to take a whip into the stable with me, and I only had to raise it and he'd stop it. However, a 2 yr old 11hh colt is slightly different to a full grown horse, so words with the owner is a good idea!

My girl does this very occasionally, although never bites, just snaps her teeth, just when her girth is being done up. She always gets a hard slap on the neck and a telling off. I wouldn't smack her on the face as she is a can be a bit head shy and I don't want to make that any worse.

God help her if she bit me!!

the owner feeds it in one of those buckets hooked over its door, the horse had long had its feed when it bit me but cant help wondering if it somehow things i am invading on its space or going to steal its food.

LOL Lauren - noo someone whose seen the blighter in action. He is getting miles better, I still maintain it was that godawful woman and her XXX mints that did it lol Im glad Aimz smacked him, I dont want people living in fear but Im not sure what I would think if I came back to find her sat astride him giving him a few mean right hooks!!

my big man trys to nip me walking in from the field,so i look at him and shout no !! i did flick him on the nose with the leadrope once and that seemed to work,i wouldnt stand for that though,id get the horse moved or tell the owner and warn her that if it continuse then you will smack it !!!!
