Oh but it is, im going into a new career as a saddle fitter, and the amount of questions like this is unreal, one didnt even know what the 17,17.5 meant but they were still buying a saddle off the internet!. Not meaning to sound nasty there but really the good of the horse comes first.

My warmblood is still recovering from a bad fitting saddle 2 nearly 3 years later his muscles arent fully recovered. Its not a money making scheme saddle fitting its to make your horse comfortable. Like someone said, would you walk round in shoes 2 sizes too small?

Not to mention the 'horse removed from field by its previous owner' I said than I smelled a troll.
 
Some people clearly do not listen so what ever we say they will do what they want. Fine, it's a free country. But it's the horse I feel sorry for. This is clearly a troll, so my advice is, up to you if you take it or not, is Stop feeding it!!
 
is it so hard to believe theres a dispute of ownership over a horse?? police desribed as grey area and it will be dealt with as a civil matter.

the 2 and a half year old was a horse my friend was selling and i was considering, her previous baby was broken at 2 n a half, but just wanted opinions.

OMG!

If this is serious then I dont know why you are asking us - its your saddle and your horse, we have never seen either so how would we know!??!?!?!?! Put it on her and ask someone knowledgeable if they think it fits, if you are so desperate to ride straight away! Otherwise why cant the horse have a couple of days to chill and settle in, and be lunged its no big deal! Patience ;) And you are rude!
 
Youd be rude to if, after having been on here a couple of months and everyone being lovely, u post on admittedly slightly daft post, and it decsend into name calling
 
If your not sure then please ask someone knowledgable to look for you, pref a master saddler....
We recently had a saddler out to fit my girls....
we tried four different saddles, all the same size width, but some just didnt sit right, pommel cut too high, too deep....it all depends on the individual horse....
i dont care whether your a troll or not tbh, but if you ask for advice off people i advise you to take it and actually listen...this is one of the friendliest forums i`ve been on and people offer valuable advice...be gratefull

How long is a piece of string? And does anyone know the winning lottery numbers? About the same odds as an accurate answer to your question! Every horse is individual, as is every saddle. Get someone professional to help you and dont even think about riding the horse in the meantime. Unless you want to end up with a horse with a bad back and you on the floor.
 
Yes it can cause that much damage, its a new horse you dont want its first ridden time with you in its new home to be of one in pain even for the slightest amount of time. This is not what good building blocks are made of.

I wish you luck with your new horse, take some time getting to know it, do some in hand work and start building that bond, there is no rush surely.

I'm just hoping whoever is loaning you the horse isn't reading this:(

If it was my horse I'd be truly worried.
 
I have had my new horse one month.

In that time I have ridden him twice- his saddle is much much better than the one he came with, but I'm not 100% happy- I will not risk the health and happiness of my horse, or our relationship by being impatient about having a saddle. He is due to get his new one fitted next weekend......that will be 5 weeks.

In that time we have bonded, worked on certain issues and got to know each other.

Surely to god you can wait a few days/weeks? Or are you too selfish to put your horse first?:confused:

people have told you sooooo many times that it will - why are you still asking??! Sounds to me like you're planning to use it on her regardless of what people advise on here, well in that case crack on and we'll wait for the next post which is all about the problems you're having with your new horse!!

Noone is being deliberately mean to you but you asked a bit of a silly question then ignored everyones advice!!!!! But it's your horse, do what you like!
 
I'm feeling kind today, so I will answer your questions, OP.

1. There is no other way of knowing if the saddle will fit than trying it on.
2. to narrow is bad, to wide is bad as well, however it is easier to temporarily pad out to wide a saddle than to stretch a to narrow one :)
3. depending how badly unsuitable the saddle is, it can do an awful lot of damage in a very short space of time.

The ideal solution is to ask your saddler to have a look at the fit while they are taking a template for your made to measure one. Alternatively ask somebody more experienced/knowledgeable to help you decide if it fits well enough for temporary use.
 
Just to play a bit of devils advocate - it was only a couple of weeks ago that there was a post where people were happily stating they NEVER had the saddler out or needed to have their saddle checked and I felt like a voice in the wilderness for that post..!

A badly fitting saddle will do damage to her back...you`ve been told...you`ve been warned....You also said when she gets delivered you wont have a saddle for a few days...personally you should be letting her settle in those few days...get used to her..build up some trust.... if you have to ride her do it bareback..

Yes but I think the people who were saying they didn't have the saddler out, or their saddles checked aren't on here asking if their current saddle will fit their new horse - they just quietly go ahead and try it with the knowledge that they can tell if it is wrong.

It would be like you wearing a pair of shoes that didn't fit you properly or wear slighly uncomfortable.

They may tear your feet to shreads after one wear, or cause blisters and bunions after a few months.

So yes a badly fitting saddle can cause a lot of damage, which is not always obvious straight away.

Save yourself some money and your horses back, get a saddle fitter out and buy a second hand saddle that fits, you don't always have buy something new, providing it fits well thats all that counts.
