Hi Guys,
As per title really i have a lovely horse (4yo) who is sure to make a fab eventer next yr..Problem is he has a sarcoid on his ear the size of a 5 pence. Nodular type.
He has had it 3 yrs its not changed and he has no others. Its not a problem for me really as its not in the way of his bridle etc.
However i will be looking to sell the horse next yr after he has done a few BE 80s and im wondering if i should go ahead and get it treated. As you probably know it can go two ways and isnt always succesfull. It may come back more aggresive or it may dissapear without a trace.
So im after some opinions really as weather to leave it alone..Would it really put you off buying a good horse because it has one solitary sarcoid??

I hope everyone is enjoying this lovely weather :(

Personally it wouldnt put me off,as my horse had one. They are treatable,as long as horse isnt covered,If I really I liked the horse then YES Id consider buying it!!!

my 4yro had a sarcoid on his sheath and it was dealt with about 2 years ago and so far has not come back.

i would buy a horse who has had sarcoids successfully treated but i wouldn't buy a horse with an untreated sarcoid.

wouldnt put me off at all, in fact we bought one begining of this year whos underbelly was covered in them. doesnt affect him in the slightest, he is in training for racing but could evennt standing on his head blindfolded! I've worked with loads of horses with sarcoids and so long as they're not in the way of tack i have no problem with them at all.

I did hear of someone using Zovirax cream (coldsore cream?) on a horse of theirs on the sarcoids and it got rid of them. Dont know if this is true or not but worth a go?!

Well thanks for the honest opinions ..I have to be honest myself and say before owning a horse with a sarcoid i probably wouldnt have purchased one. But now with owning one, it really isnt that big a deal if theyre not in a problem area. Its the fear of the unknown i suppose and always wondering if one will pop up tommora in a difficult area .

I think if you have never come across before these its scary, depends on person i bought a smashing 3yo hes four and a half now i moved yards six month ago and he developed a few tiny ones he went over on his leg and went lame/bad back he then picked up a virus. He then developed a new one which grew big very quickly within a month which attracted flies really badly my horses were on under his belly near his sheath and the latter huge one between his front legs .I had him treated last week with liverpool cream three treatment cost £300 he was sedated to do this and tha latter just went overnight !Swelling were it was but really it started to reduce a week or two before treatment .There is no guarantees with sarcoids they could come back or any horse you buy i would get it vetted, ask for price to be reduced to include treatment of sarcoid .If its the right horse go for it at the right price. If you go to sell you might meet some people who wont buy because of them , but he might not have one by then !
N o , it wouldnt put me off , just watch those flies next year and use fly rugs /creams etc, check daily and get treated if any show or use a herbal supplement like sarc-x which i will start feeding after xmas i have had a few friends say there horse had one when younger and never returned .Good luck x
