Would a seller do this?

Basically, a friend of mine is going to purchase his first horse, as he is going to be given £x amount of money from the proceeds of a family house being sold.

I got a little over-excited and have found him the perfect horse (on paper of course!) - trust me he is very picky about his horses :D

Anyway, the house is definatly going to be sold, it's just a case of doing it. He's concerned the horse will be sold by the time he has the money for it (which he will have eventually just a case of getting his mum onto putting it on the market!).

I said it would be worth emailing the seller and describing his situation (as well as his experience... what he wants out of the horse... his arrangements etc etc). I said they may possibly be willing to do 'loan with a view to buy' situation which effectively would be just until he has the money.

I also said that, understandably, the seller is probably going to be really wary of him as on the surface it does sound suspicious!

So what do you think? He would be willing to provide whatever the seller wanted in order to secure this horse if it definatly is the one, once he has personally been and tried it and so on. Would somebody be willing to do this in your experience?

Nb, the advert says it is for sale due to the daughter going to college.

There's never any harm in asking.

I personally would be really suspicious. Not on the same scale but it's like someone telling an Aston Martin garage they've just won the Lottery so could they just loan a car until they can pay for it once the money has come through! They just wouldn't do it!

Can he put a deposit on it until he can pay for him in full and get it home? I guess no matter how small it shows he really wants it (if it turns out that way), even if he doesn't take it away. . ?

Plenty of good horses out there - bid when the money is in place - if the nice horse is still out there - good, but if not, don't put a seller in a difficult situation.

I did almost exactly that!

Quite a few moons ago now, but my grandmother died and left me some money. I went and found the perfect horse, explained my situation to the seller, and they let me have her on LWVTB. Then as soon as the money came through, I could pay for her. Worked perfectly!

Oh totally. We've already discussed that it's going to sound really suspicious... but I honestly can't tell you just how picky he is!

A deposit sounds like a good idea, I will suggest it.

If the seller is unhappy with the situation he will just walk away, but we thought no harm in asking as this horse really does look cracking!

Ahh sounds very similar! How did you prove to her you were going to eventually have the money may I ask? We haven't yet come up with a solution to prove he's not just wasting her time!

I am abroad and just bought in the UK, I explained I was moving and could place a deposit and the full balance after the move (purely as we were moving 10 hours away and I didn't want to buy him then have to travel him an additional 10 hours after the huge trip from the UK to Norway for him). The seller was okay with that and I soon take delivery of my boy. A few sellers were willing to do this for me, although no private sales. I did not like the idea of leaving a large deposit with a private person. I stuck to the well known good rep studs/dealers.

Sadly a delay in the international bank transfer has left me waiting for the new boy (I transferred the money many weeks ago but it is taking forever to reach the sellers account, nothing dodgy just typical banks), and I can't wait to get him here now :D

I used a reputable agent to try the horse for me so my buying looked professional, I think that helped my case.
