Would a splint cause problems???

Not sure if would fail the vetting, but if it is listed on the vet report then there is a strong chance the insurance company will place an exclusion on the lower legs before you've even started.

No, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. My boy developed a splint in his early years but it did eventually disappear. Not sure how long it took though.

My youngster has thrown one too, no idea how she did it but it's there and quite obvious! She's only had it a few months but it hasn't made her lame at all. Definitely wouldn't concern me.

He's a very handsome chap :)

There is no reason it would fail a vetting on a small fully formed splint, they rarely cause a problem once settled and should not be an issue for insurance purposes, most horses will have one or two.

Honestly I wouldn't write it off for having a splint - they are so so common and you'll never get a horse if you discount anything with a splint :)

I've never heard of all a horses lower legs being excluded from insurance from a splint, ever.

But contact insurance company for reassurance.

this I will do :) thanks guys, this forum has been sucha support in my shopping, saves me bugging my much mire experienced but very busy with family/ running a stud yard/competing friend who gets about 3 emails a day :o:D

I have been at this horse thing for more than forty years and although spints can cause issues if they interfer with the suspensory ligament or the knee joint I have had numerous horses with splints and have never had an issue .
Can't comment on the insurance thing though as I never insure.

Only going by what vet said when he vetted Nugz - he's found that he's had to send further letters to confirm that in his opinion the splint he found on vetting should not cause a problem for the job the horse is intended for, and in some cases the insurance company has excluded any splint claims on any other legs and in a couple of cases exluded the lower leg

So he tends to not make a note of them, unless he feels they are cause for concern :o

Nugz has splints - 2 days of lameness, 4 days of but and a week off. Seem to occur same time of year, so expecting his last one in March next year :D

I saw that one, too young for me but what a stunning black beauty lookalike! I was wondering about splints on one I've emailed about so glad shouldnt be a problem, still wondering about insurance though...

My yearling has a splint :( I don't suppose hooning around on rock hard grounds has helped much... apparently it's fairly common as I asked a breeder on the farm and in her experience, they come and go as they please.
