Before anyone asks no its not for my horse.
Looking at horses for sale and one I like has been hobdayed, would it put you off?
Would there be any complications in the future?

Its basically when a horses larynx is paralysed and the larynx doesnt open and close like it should to let air in, so they have a tie back operation to tie back the paralysed bit of the larynx to let air in,
someone correct me if I am wrong though.

Are you getting rid of Ben?

Sorry, irrelevant!

i have one hes no different to any other horse apart from his feed/ hay has to be from ground, think moonfleet had one mite be wrong, alot of race horses have this done to improve performance (air quality intake), to have had the hobday done the horse must have been making mild noise,if it was bad it would have been tied back aswell!!!! get it scoped before you buy, if he needs a tieback as well will cost around £1,000!!!!

tie backs and hobdays are 2 slightly different ops,

hobday quaterises/removes some damaged tissue off of the slightly paralysed flap (low grade paralysis)
tieback does as you said (poss grade 3 and above 5 being worst)

Yes I am getting rid of ben

Its been a long and hard decison but have realised hes not cut out for what I want him to do, and it would be unfair to keep him and be unhappy, so am going to sell him and get myself a coloured horse if I see one that could do eventing and bit of dressage.
Ideally would love a coloured but nothing I like at the minute.

My horse had a hobday/tie back op and he was fine, and performance wise was brilliant. When they call they sound like a car that won't start, and feed from the floor, but other than that, no difference!

Thanks I will be so sad to let him go he is fantastic and so honest, will jump anything doesnt matter what is on it or underneath it.

Pinktiger I knew I was wrong that what you get when you search it in google lol.
I think If I go to see horse what has been hobdayed will get it all scoped etc just in case.

did forget to add, damp feeds including hay!! and they (as above) sound like they are whispering when yelling!!

if he's already been hobdayed/tied back then surely problem has already be fixed. Never heard of anyone needed it redone. Doubt it'd put me off, have it vetted and get the vet to have a look as a known pre-existing condition

No would not put me off, a horse I recently sold had been hobdayed, and it did not affect him any way other than he could not neigh properly !,
infact alot of eventers are hobdayed so I have heard ??

I did buy a horse that was hobdayed and would again!
The bay in my sig was hobdayed and although he was PTS a few months ago at an early age the hobday had nothing to do with it. He was hobdayed with a previous owner but the aftercare wasn't kept up so he developed a cough when he was warming up. It didn't stop him doing anything (the arthritis did

) and he loved nothing better than to do some jumping or a bl**dy good gallop

I would have no hesitation in buying a hobdayed horse. We have an 18hh heavy weight hunter at my yard that's been hobdayed. He's never had a days problem in his life as a result of the procedure.

I've got 2 horses which have had wind op's- my father's 17.3 german Wb needed the op when we bought him, we paid for it and he's going so much better now, (he had tieback and hobday) my new boy has had a hobday and you really can't tell the difference.
As the other posts say, you do need to feed from the ground , no haynets and ideally soak the hay, but apart from, that its really not a problem-

If that's the only issue with your potential new one, I wouldn't
let it phase me!

Good luck!!
