Would anyone else like H&H to do breed articles?

I'd personally love to see H&H do a small article on different breeds every week, especially the rarer breeds. I think it would be a great opportunity for us to learn more about the rarer breeds and for the rare breed owners to get some recognition. Maybe it's just me but I know that I'd really enjoy learning about different breeds- there are so many breeds out there and I don't know much about more than a few. I was so excited when a thread came up a few weeks ago about a lady introducing her Akhal Tekes because it was great to see the more unusual breeds, I just think it would be nice to see them in H&H.

That is pretty commonly done in the monthly magazines though, and there are countless books that do an A-Z of the breeds.

I think H&H are more a news magazine than the monthlies and this type of article is more suited to them. But I'm not a subscriber or even a regular buyer so who am I to say!

They did do a series of very small articles tucked in the back on the magazine. If you are interested in rare breeds I have written about the Cleveland Bay and Shagya Arab for Horsebreedersmagazine which is on line. I was really surprised at what my research uncovered.

Yes, there are so many breeds out there it would be interesting to know more about them. The books don't tell you much about individual breeds in depth.

Hi

I can't believe this post has come up. I own a rare breed, and we are about to launch the British Curly Horse and Pony Society. I contacted them yesterday to see if they would be interested in running an article on the breed. The response was not a positive one. The would only really be interested in popping something in the news if a curly horse did something special !!! They are Special. The are an hypoallergenic horse that allow people who have allergies own/ride horses. Your Horse Live a running a rare breed section this year, which one of the stallions going is a curly, (please pop over to say hello). We need all the help we can get to promote this amazing breed. :)

I think it's a fantastic idea to run a section in Horse and Hound each week on rare breeds. Other than the superb native breeds in the UK there are lots of rare horses in the world which are interesting to gain knowledge on. As Curly says above the Bashkir Curly Coat is a rare breed and not much is known on these horses in the UK. Other being hypoallergenic they have the most remarkable temperament. I know from trawling the internet there are heaps of rare horses out there so I can't see why H and H cannot bring this into their magazine. Would a poll help to sway them? I know with sheep and cattle that the more we eat and raise awareness of the rare breeds the more they are bred so become less rare. Not that I am suggesting we eat our horses! The Suffolk Punch is local to me and these are more endangered that the Giant Panda. Sad state of affairs in my opinion when being in an affluent country.

I would like to see H & H doing a in-depth article of the "plight" of our Native breeds..indescriminate breeding, their sad lot at the markets and sales and how we, as a collective Horse World can help to improve/resolve problems of over breeding...

Overall, just a weekly general article would be a step in the right direction...not everyone wants to read about WFP and what pants he wears...

and i just might re-subscribe if the magaizine proves to be worth reading again!

I've posted again as I think there must be more people on here with native breeds who'd like to see more promotion of their specific breed. I also think that the younger members of HHO should be wanting to learn more about rare and native breeds of horse. Come on youngsters - show some interest!!!!

I would like them to take up some of the issues brought up by this forum. They make very interesting reading and I am sure the big wide world would find them a great read.

Elywn Hartley-Edwards did a complete series of horse breeds MANY years ago for Horse and Hound (shows my age!) I have some of them tucked away still. Did all the American breeds, Indian, Russian, German, French, etc. etc. Never knew there were so many.

This thread just shows that it's not just me who would like to see rarer breeds be showcased. I think so many people would learn from it and it would give a platform to people like CurlyWurly123 to show their wonderful breeds that some people may not even have heard of! I definitely agree that the plight of the native breeds also should be addressed. I'm glad that other people agree that there is a need for rarer breeds to have their moment- if only H&H would listen!

Mm the problem is, is getting them to take an iterest...... Any ideas anyone would be greatly recieved..:D :D :D :D :D

Anyone - Do i need to beg or die of humiliation first... :o :o :o :D :D :D

Please...

I think Curly that it might be a case of what you said above sadly. When I was younger I couldn't get enough from learing about different breeds from the rarer ones to the more popular ones. I think we should aim to raise awareness of all these breeds and hopefully increase their popularity amongst equine owners...

I would be v interested. Particularly if it moved away from just looking at the breeds as show animals but looked at horses of particular breeds being ridden today and what they are achieving. Also more info than just passing on 'arabs are flighty', 'cobs are slow' and 'cbs are stubborn'!!! Either our native breeds seem to be breed willy nilly, or they are on the critical list! More needs to be made of them so we appreciate what we have, what makes a good example of a particular breed and examples of them going out and doing rather than concentrating on breed shows.
Would love it!

eta - do not agree with the breed steriotypes given just as an eg of what would make a bad article - so don't shoot me!
