Oh dear! It can easily mount up! Have you had a chat with the vets about paying in installments? They are usually quite accommodating and it helps a lot.

I got the bill this morning so haven't spoken to the vets yet.It has come at the worst worst possible time.. How much would I have to pay in installments?
I agree you should get insurance. But your vet may or may not agree to do installments. How much can you afford per month? There is not much hope that they will let you pay over a long period of time.
My vets on speed dial and I ahve seen FAR too much of him this year, but my bill is no where near that.
I agree; you should negotiate with your vet and ask if you can repay it over, say a year, or two years; they may be satisfied with that.
Or if that fails, you could go to your bank, and ask for a loan to repay the bill, again paying it off over a year or two.
I don't know if you have access to anyone like the Citizen's Advice Bureau in France, but such people could help you to negotiate.
Finally, for the future, if you are not insuring your horse, you could always put aside a set amount per month to 'self-insure' as it were...in case of future emergencies.
I had a vet bill of close to £4000 last year, so know how it feels
vets are usually very good at letting you pay in installments. lets face it they'd rather see a certain amount per month than nothing at all.
i also have insurance, as i know how easy bills can mount up
try not to panic, i'm sure you will be able to work something out.
Niagara got phenomena, and then came down with emphysema. He was on very very strong pain killers/anti biotics for about a week. The vet came several times a day everyday to drain the water from his lungs etc.. We are all amazed he is still her! He is even starting to be ridden again very lightly. It happened 3 months ago. I only got the bill this morning. I was dreaming that they had forgotten about it. Obviously not
Obviously Niagara will never be a 100% and won't be like he was before. But the vet said in a year that he might be able to start doing the things he used to. Just over a long period of time. I am hoping for the best.
