Would anyone loan this horse?

Hello all,

Just after a few views on whether I could find a loaner for my older lady. I say older...she's only 19. I haven't full decided but I sometimes think it would be nice for her to have a use (other than looking pretty in the field) and it would save me a bit of time and money. I'm not sure I can quite yet cope with idea of being parted form her to a complete stranger so it may be that she would have to stay at current yard where trusted YO could keep an eye on her or move with me and my younger chap if I decide to move yards.

Anyhow...two years ago she was a fun hack (bit nappy on her own but nothing major), well schooled and about to embark on some local dressage competitions. Then she started to have a niggling lameness and was diagnosed with arthritis. She did come back into work after that but as I wanted to start competing I ended up buying a youngster so she could have a quieter life. Things have changed recently and I'm working longer hours and about to start a part time law conversion so she's been retired for the last few months - shoes off etc. She's not on a joint supplement at all at the moment and is sound most of the time in the field but I had been experimenting with different ones. I struggle to hack her out as I can't get her down the stoney lane without putting shoes on her but (viscious circle!) I don't really have time to ride her enough to justify putting the shoes on.

If someone did take her on it would be a bit of a project as she has been out of work for a while. But probably with the shoes back on and the right management she could come back into light work - hacking out and a bit of schooling. She's had her moments in the past (she's a mare!) but fundamentally she's very sweet - so do you think anybody would be interested? Not necessarily full loan...part or a sharing sort of arrangement?

It feels awful talking about her like this but truth be told she's no use at the moment and a very expensive ornament! Nevertheless if worst came to worst and I really couldn't afford both, she would always stay over the youngster.

And some pictures of her from 1 or 2 years ago.

Your situation is identical to mine. My mare is 18 and has arthritis so i bought a younger horse and she is now on part loan. I say part loan the lady pays £25.00 per week but comes down everyday.

I am there anyway looking after my boy so i make sure she has am and pm feeds and bring her in and out of the field to give her a rest off the grass (she had also had laminitis) and the lady comes down does all her jobs and either hacks/schools or lunges at least 5 times a week. She grooms her a lot and gives her all the cuddles and attention i don’t have time to give her.

I works really well and i am always on hand to keep an eye on everything.

Re the supplements the best one i have found is Blue chip Dynamic it has worked wonders and even allowed my mare to jumped a little bit which she loves.

Good luck hope you manage to get things sorted.

Yup they would! She sounds exactly like my mare - same age and everything! She also has artritis, sound to hack and do bits of schooling but not too much. I'm now on our 3rd sharer (first one was before we moved so she gave up due to distance, second one got her own horse and now on third). All have stayed around a year though. Takes a little longer to weed out people who want to gallop around/jump etc. I must admit I have sharers rather than loan but I never ride her so essentaially they get a loan situation but she stays on our yard and if I do want her any particular day for my mum or someone to ride then I can have her with no difficulties.
She also has her moments but 99% of the time is very safe. I was lucky in that to start with I just hacked out with them every time, then sharer made friends with others on the yard and went out with them, and then eventually went out alone (my mare also a bit nappy/spooky alone). Now they go off for long rides alone and seem to have a great time! Saves me some money and loads of time.

I certainly would. She is a sweetie and mares are fab. If only I were closer and financially better off!! Oh well, never mind. Someone is gonna be vry lucky when they loan that little mare.

I think she would make a great loan for the right person. have you though of getting horse boots for when she is hacked? Its a big upfront cost but you only have to put them on when you are riding.
