A friend of mine has been rather dumped on by the owner of a yearling filly, they bred the filly but they sold her over a year ago because they were struggling financially and needed to reduce their numbers . About 5 months ago they were asked to look after the filly for somone who was struggling financially and they agreed to look after it for a short while while that person sorted themselves out. at the time it was fine - the weather was Ok and the filly could live out at little or no cost to my friends. However now things are different, my friends are really struggling financially and have had to sell their home, the filly is now stabled because the weather is foul and the facilities they have access to. They have approached the owner of the filly and asked them to have her back but have been told that they will simply put her to sleep and they want my friends to buy her. They can't they have no money at all and to be honest the cost of her keep over the past few months has far exceeded her sale value. In my opinion they should ignore the emotional blackmail and either insist they take her back or sign her over to my friends so they can sell her to recoup some of their expenses or even give her away to minimise their outgoings. but would anyone be interested in a rising 2 year old flat bred TB filly? and if so what sort of price. I really hate seeing them taken for a ride like this.

I would love her, but trying to persaude mother that we need another might not work :/
There's no money in horses really at the min, so it would be meat money..

I know it would be meat money - in fact getting rid for free would be possible, the racehorse industry is just non existant - which is why they are in the mire financially. But this owner is blackmailing them emotionally into keeping her

Do you know what breeding lines she has at all?
You friend should really not be expected to look after her like this.. she is the owners responsibility so they should fnd homes for her

If it's well bred, send it to the Doncaster or Tattersall sales. I'm not a great one for sending horses to the sales but that is the sort of place that the filly would be seen by the right people who would be interested in buying her. At 2 years old, she would most likely go for meat money on the open market and would be unlikely to attract a good riding type home. Or you could try loaning as an embryo transfer mare, Beaufort ET were looking a few months ago for loan mares. It might buy a little time until she is old enough to be backed and at least given the chance to be a useful riding sort. Right now, she doesn't have much going for her - too young to ride, a TB filly (there are a lot around

) and a forced sale meaning that she will very likely go to a bargain hunter or the meat man...

We have already looked at the TB sales as an opption - but the cost of getting her there far outweighs her value and means she will have to be kept for another 2/3 months making her a very expensive filly. I know it is hard but am tempted to recommend PTS as to be honest that saves her from a life of potential misery. the TB sales last year were awash with yearlings/2 year olds which is where there were TB youngsters just dumped after the sales because no one wanted them.

how about the blood bank? i know some people might say thats no life for a horse but if they are going to pts at least she would have a herd and a life

Bless her please dont put her to sleep she may have a good chance of getting a home, it just takes one person who is intereted, i know i'll be looking for something in a yr or so and when i do it will be a cheapy most likely a tb yrling baby like the one you are describing from the sales i look at horsemart pretty much every day. it would be at least worth giving her a chance i wish you the best of luck x
