My chestnut mare has a horrible tendency to always refuse the first jump of a jumping session or round. Once I have forced her over, she enthusiastically jumps everything else with no hesitation! I am entered for my first show with her this weekend and would like some tips on how to stop her from doing this.

Many Thanks

Hang a carrot (or prefered fruit/vegetable of her choice) off a stick in front of her nose...???! Sorry no help i know, but if it comes to it... lol

If you could time it right you could pop over the practice jump and then canter straight into the ring and over the next jump which she will hopefully think is number 2.

Probably won't work. No suggestions apart from kick on and growl ?!

I'm too much of a coward to enjoy jumping any more but I understand that the 1st jump and the last jump very commonly give problems. Tense and edgy and going AWAY from home does for the 1st and too glad it's all over and you're going back TOWARDS home does for the last. So as B says, try to jump the 1st as if it's the 2nd or 3rd - and don't forget the last x
