Hack out bareback??

just wondering really, I do pretty regularily for no other reason than just because I can tbh.
It teaches me to ride better (better seat and balance) and I can feel every muscle working, which is amazing when everything comes together even compared to riding with a saddle.

Im not talking wandering down to the field bareback on a loose rein, I do mean "proper" riding- on roads, cantering, leg yielding, collection, extension etc

I appreciate some of you may go oh your putting people at risk yadda yadda but I will be honest and say I feel no less in control with or without. That and the fact I trust her more than any other horse, had her since birth and ridden her since the beginning. Every step has been taken with her, and anyone could take her anywhere. She is utterly superb and worth her weight in gold, I cant imagine trying it with any other horse :o

*wait for poll please*

i've ridden my horse bareback in the field - but i school in the field so its not a toddle. i have done all 3 paces, and lateral work.. however i find the withers rather sharp, spine not great and it don't find it all that comfortable, i'd rather ride in a saddle with no stirrups to improve balance with my weight spread over the back more and not have horse's spine sticking between my bum cheeks :o (she is 33 so doesn't have a very flat back) I also don't have great hacking round me and as much as i trust her a lot out hacking, i have found a few things that she seriously dislikes - pigs and donkeys, we do the most amazing passage, rein back and spinning. only thing that gets us passed the donkey is dismounting to lead and/or a car coming up behind that fills the country lane.. i'm not prepared to try passage bareback!

I used to ride bareback and hack out bareback all the time years ago.
Not sure I would trust my balance or my mare for me to stay on. She is spookier with age and I am stiffer with my dodgy back, so not worth it.
I have ridden bareback in the school and don't mind that as she is far less likely to spook, call me chicken :D:p:D:eek::D

phew, was waiting for the thread to crash and burn :S

hairy butt- tell me about it! cant wait till shes clipped

One of the benefits of welsh cobs, nice withers :D Thats one thing I havent done (jumping) because we dont jump very often with a saddle, so without would be pushing it a little i fear. never say never and all that jazz

was just playing on my mind because I rode past a local livery yard when this woman was riding in the arena with an audience, and we went floating past (fantastic extended welsh trot, with tail over her back lol) and it never crossed my mind how odd it looked at the time, it just felt perfect with all that contained power

I spent most of the re-backing stage with my little welsh mare bareback lol! Including introducing her to jumping haha. Was great fun! :D

LMAO - my horse has a wither like a sharks fin :o There is no way I am going to ride her bareback!!

But I do agree though that should you have a "normal" shaped horse - then riding bareback is brilliant for your position :D
