..... left my two in their turnout rugs overnight in their stables? Just got in from dog training classes. Before we went out I brought my two in from the field and 'chucked' them in their stables with their tea as I only had 20 minutes in between football matches and swimming lessons (children, not horses!) before having to rush out again with the dogs and one child dog handler. Now sitting here wondering whether I will be really bad if when I went to give them their hay in the next few minutes, I left them in their turnout rugs. Had every intention of changing them in to their stable rugs, but it's cold, foggy and frosty already, so surely they will be happier being left as they are? Please tell me I'm not really bad! :)

I never change rugs when I bring mine in, unless he's too warm or cold or extremely wet underneath rug. Why create work for yourself? I have the same problem. Come home from work, pick up kids, bring in horses for feeding/hay/stable. Feed kids, get them ready to go to cubs, all in the space of an hour (sometimes less). Talk about mulit-tasking!

Mine have been sleeping in their turnouts for months! They'll be glad you didn't go and take off their nice warm ones and put cold ones on instead I'm sure. It's parky out there!

Thank you all for your support!! This would be the first time in 30 odd years of horse/pony ownership that I haven't changed them into their 'pyjamas' and it feels strangely liberating!! I'm normally such a stickler for doing things the right way with horses (my yard is probably cleaner than the kitchen floor!), but fairly new to having them at home where noone else can frown at me for doing the wrong thing. :)

mine is out all summer and in all winter. cant use a stable rug in the field so i have a turnout that she lives in all year and a fleece for shows and extra warmth. shes warm and comfy makes no differance to her if its waterproof or not

T/O Rugs are great as stable rugs if you have a particularly dirty irk who mulches it all in aaaaaaaaannd thinks its great to lie in it! Least you can hose it off easier than you can clean a stable rug through the winter...

It is a different ball game having them at home. But the best bit is,,,,, you can make up your own rules without fear of criticism. :D

i always change rugs as its time spent with horse rug dries check horse over etc BUT dont fret about not changing a rug for night sweetheart - it wont hurt them so chill breath an relax ok and now get glass of wine and think its my time ok xxx

Mine has his on tonight because I have to turn out at half 6 and can't be bothered going up slightly earlier to give me time to change rugs!

mine is on a very posh yard in her turn out and i dont care. i asked if i was doing anything wrong ig yard policy/rules. there answer was very refreshing to hear, they said its your horse so your rules. they really are very relaxed but nobody falls out. its a dressage yard generally and i have got over the feeling that i might be criticised and ive only been there two weeks

The best thing about keeping your horses at home, is that you can do exactly as you like. If you want to leave their turn-out rugs on, then you can do just that.
And of course, you will adjust them in the morning before turning out again which will give you an opportunity to check both horses over, won't you?;)

Oh, yes, they will both be checked over. In fact they were only checked over a couple of hours before they came in as they were lunged, then put back out again. I could have brought them in then, but I really like them to be out as long as possible in the day time. :)

Yes pure evil only joking;) I change mine for the ones who come in only because i think it stops the rugs getting so smelly and stable rugs not so heavy and stops my horses mane getting rubbed as lighter weight.

Do i think your horses care no, probably think its great as more snuggly as long as you readjust them if they have slipped, lots of people dont change them as long as horse are checked over reg they wont come to any harm.

When our horses were in at night they always had their FAL turnout rugs on. They are dual purpose and designed to be used inside and out. As long as the rugs you use are breathable I don't have a problem with it at all.

Stable rugs...what are they? :D

Most of the horses on our yard don't have a rug change (as in stable rug) unless they have been clipped, a sudden drop in temp or have damp or sweaty rugs on.

Enjoy your new status and chill!!! They're obviously very well looked after steeds and I am another advocate for leaving turnouts on unless they are wet through - sure they are warm and well and not at all concerned at their new 'pyjamas'!!

when i bought my horse io bought him stable rugs - waste of money ive never ever used them!!!
He comes in in his turnout rug and it dries when hes in - i would never ever buy another stable rug unless he was on box rest
