I bought mine off Ebay but called and viewed before parting with cash! As someone else said you need to examine it carefully - check floor, wiring etc before committing to buy.
You could find its a death trap but also it could be a real bargain. Mine was - older IW505 but new wiring and new ali floor and matting for around the same money.
If you can make it down to view then I would go but I wouldn't buy unseen.
Ive bought vehicles etc but never pay the money until Ive seen and inspected it. For a horsebox I paid a small deposit online but not the rest of the money.
The paypal fees are very high for big items so most genuine sellers will want payment on collection anyway with maybe a paypal deposit.
Also trailers ARE very nickable and also have been the subject of scams (false account, use photos of a trailer some genuine seller is advertising, offer to deliver the trailer, disappear once the money is paid, ebay/paypal not interested as seller is non existent)
You can buy without seeing it, but def dont PAY for it without seeing it.
The people who bought my trailer from ebay did so without seeing it first. I tried to encourage them to come see it and was really nervous about it because even though I had taken lots of photos and described what I thought needed fixing (it was a very old Rice) you can never really tell what others think, but they seemed pretty happy when they got here to pick it up.
Have been to see 3 trailers this year that were all not 100% as described so didn't bid.
New floor doesn't mean the struts underneath are sound (the problem we have had really).
My horses safety and the ability of it towing is priority and not something I am willing to compromise for a bargain. We have given up on bargains now and are saving a couple grand for a decent trailer.
I would ring them, ask for more information about it - age, why are they selling it? Any known issues with it? When did it last have a service? Do they have the keys to the hitch lock? Ask for the serial number off the chassis - so that you can do some checks to ensure it is not listed as stolen. How long have they had it? What is the floor constructed of?
You can pay about ten pounds for a complete insurance and police check through TER. http://www.ter-europe.org/ . A certificate showing it was all clear would protect you from any future problems. YOu don't need to say you are going to do this check - just say that you need the trailer details (chassis number etc) to get a quote from your insurance company to cover it for theft (they really do ask for these details to provide a quote). The TER will also tell you if the date of manufacture is the same as what the person is telling you.
Do they have any of the original paperwork for it?
I have viewed trailers from ebay as well, and found they were pretty much as described. I did notice one ad that was completely dodgy though, for an Equitrek, and they were unable to provide any further photos of it, and refused to give the chassis number - they said you had to pay £7000 via paypal before they would give this out. They also would not provide a phone number. I reported it to ebay.
Can you post on here - something like "anyone live in the such and such area and want to go view a trailer for me?" possibly offer a small remuneration to cover petrol etc - pay by Paypal. - that's if it's a long way for you to view.
Or, as someone else said, pay a small deposit via Paypal (do not do a bank transfer or you will have no buyers protection) - go see it, and if you like it and the serial numbers match up etc, then give the rest in cash and take it away straight away. If it turns out to be "not as described" - you can open a dispute through the resolution centre in ebay -to get your deposit back.
