Would I be too big?

I'm just mooching through various adverts for horses as looking at getting a project to back/break or bring on and then have a lot of fun with it. I'm looking at various horses to see what is there in my price range and there are quite a few I like. I am just wondering whether I would be too big for a 14.2hh? The few I am looking at are mainly natives (part bred in the main) and I am 5.5 and weigh 8.5 stone.

This is a genuine question as I don't want to look at them if I'm not going to be "right" on them!

no!!! I am 5ft5 and rather heavier than you (damn you!!) and ride a 14.1hh native (see pics in my sig), you'd be absolutely fine

Wen I was 8stone, i'm 5ft 3 btw. I used to ride my old 12.2!!!
I'm now on a 14.2 and i wouldn't want anything bigger!!

Seriously, I didn't look out of place on Fine, did I? And you have to remember a chunky pony will take up your leg - natives and cobs were designed to carry a full grown man so I'm sure a shrimp like you will be fine

My 3 year old is 14hh. I'm 5'9 and 11 stone, She's chunky so can carry the weight easily. Unsure of her breed but me and most of the people at the yard think she deffinately has welsh sec D in her.

I was more concerned about my length of leg and being able to balance I guess. Wonka is part bred Welsh and he is so slight - delicate I think the word is!! and initially it was so difficult trying to keep my balance as it was very easy to unbalance him.

Definately not. I'm 5.2ft, 8stone and ride a 12.2hh for the owner occasionally to keep him ticking over (as the little girl is on lead rein).

The balance prob mainly goes away once you get used to each other, the only bit that stays weird for longer is nothing in front of you when you do jumping...but even then you get used to it. Go for it, my Haffie is 14.2 and I am 10 1/2 stone and she can carry me for hours without even drawing breath.
