would i brake her back ?? lol

I school a 13.2hh newfie (not a real chunk but decent bone, looks like a mini warmblood!) in dressage, and I feel far too big to gallop or jump her... I'm about 9 stone (maybe more, due to christmas and snow ect) and about 5'8. And I do feel constantly guilty about squishing her! I feel too big on my sister's 15hh, but then he's a super lightweight tb x...

If I was you, I would go for a bigger horse, it takes any guilt out of it!! If that's the temperament you like, you could do worse than a good welsh cob! :D

no not buying on the sole basis that she looks like my old mare (who was 13.3hh arab x something?) and carried me from the age of 10 weighing not much to age of 16 weighing 11stone with no probs at all.

i am going on the basis that she is everything i am looking for. i dont want a big horse (she isnt) i want something forward and fun(she is) but responsive. her rider atm is about 13 stone and has done PO XC and other things oon her in the past. i have not rode her yet as i have always had my own to ride. she hasnt been rode this winter due to owners personal reasons (nothing to do with the pony) so has lost tone and condition and is just a bit squishy at the moment.

i posted this because of a passing comment made to me about my weight and fattys riding ponies so i just wondered if i was too heavy for her.

i have had ponies and horses and to be honest i prefer ponies (shorter distance to fall :D) and obviously easier to get on if out hacking or whatever.
im after something just to hack. i dont really compete anymore (only in hand with the appies) so im not fussed about jumping and all that just the odd canter/gallop on a field out on a hack :)

i do have a few others lined up to go view as well as her so if she is not suitable, or i am too heavy then i have a few more lined up. im not in a rush to buy/loan so i am going tto take my time and look around anyway.

thank you all for your comments and please note i havent taken offence about weight i was only joking :D im not bothered. im a fatty and proud of it :D:D xxxx thanks again for the comments xx

Im glad you havent taken offence to some of the posts regerding weight. Your weight was never the issue- the size of the pony was. Im by no means overweight but id be too big for that wee thing! Sounds like the reasons for wanting a smaller ride is confidence and ease, if i were you id maybe go for some sort of cob, even if the pony pictured was a few hands taller she'd still be quite fine

I agree. The little cob on our yard is 14.1 hh and loads of fun. He's forward going, loves jumping, is well schooled and a good hack. His owner is around 14 stone but he's really stocky and copes well with her weight, especially as she's a very balanced rider.

To be honest its really hard to tell from a photo, so I would go and have a look and see what you think. I am also 12. half stone and 5ft 7. No one who knows me would guess I weigh that much, I don't look it, carry it well for some reason. I have a 13.2 welsh cob, quite chunky and though I feel a little tall on him, I am no way too heavy for him.

Arabs can carry weight. You are lighter than the current rider. You might feel too big depending on how wide/narrow she is.

Go and have a look.

Oh and on another note, a friend of mine went to a lecture about horses and their backs, given by vets and other professionals. The consensus was, it is not the weight that is the problem, but the bad riding. Including those who sit heavily, those who haul their horses in the mouth and all other sorts of things.

Just to add, I do have the 13.2 cob, and he manages fine with me. BUT, I wouldn;t have bought him - I didn't, he belongs to a friend, I wanted something to ride, she wanted a good home. If I was buying I would have bnought something taller, even if only 14hh.
