Would it be irresponsible?

So this is a slightly hypothetical but...

would it be irresponsible to breed from a bitch who was good example of her breed, with a well tempered and equally good example of a dog because they're a rare breed and you'd feel guilty having a bitch and not breeding.

Taking into consideration I'm well aware I may not be able to sell them (both because of lack of popularity and because I'm soft

) but I'm more than happy to hang on to any that don't sell and will be vetting new owners.

I really want another Corgi.....but I really want a bitch. I'd only have one litter, would do my research to ensure I'm avoiding in breeding/genetic faults and bad temperament and I've got no problem keeping all of them if suitable homes don't present themselves. I'm aware it's easy enough to say now but I truly mean it, I'd never breed a litter and expect someone else to pick up the pieces.

I just wanted objective opinions really. It's not something I'm considering in the immanent future as I'm in no place to buy or breed from a bitch but it's something I've been mulling over for about 5 1/2 years.....we've had Jack 6

I wouldn't say it was ideal. But if you are really prepared to do loads of research before hand, and genuinely feel you could cope with half a dozen corgis then no not irreponsible. However, are you thinking of using Jack, because that I would not recommend. Apart from the fact that if he has never mated a bitch at 6 he may not have much clue , he also may then become bitch mad, and if he is not going to be used again would be a bit mean.

Lol.....not using Jack....he's not got the plumbing

but having him (and seeing lots of his family) has really ingrained a real love of the breed. I want a bitch as my next dog regardless of breed but with them being so thin on the ground I'd feel guilty not having one (and only one) litter from her. If I get a bitch and she's a poor example then no question she''d be done....but I refuse to pay what most ask for Corgis for a bad one.

Aah right, would be a bit difficult for him then.

As I said, would depend on the quality of the bitch. I had a Lancashire Heeler which was actually on the KC rare breed list at the time, and did intend breeding from her but sadly she wasn't good enough so that was that.

Sadly the fact that there aren't huge numbers about (which I didn't actually realise) quite often means there are more bad specimens so glad you are only planning on breeding if your bitch is good enough. Or of course there is always corgi rescue

I couldn't find a Corgi rescue online....probably being thick

but I only found american sites when I had an admittedly quick look.

I've bought all my bitches, except the Doberman X, with the intention of breeding them if the bitch was good enough. But until I got my Finnish Lapphund, there has always been something that have made me decide not to breed the bitches I had before breeding Jonna.
So I don't see anything wrong with your plan.

Glad you found them, my friends MIL home checks for them (she has 2 rescues) so you never know if you do go down that route she might do your check.

Bella was bought for her breeding potential but she just doesn't cut it for me, I'm afraid.
Mother is ever hopeful of some sort of miracle!
