Would it be madness…

I'd go for it, if for any reason it doesn’t work out you can always bring him home again.

Mine have recently joined a herd in a massive field. My young ones play rough and for the first couple of weeks they were going round like a pair of thugs but they soon learnt who appreciates their antics and who doesn't and have have chilled out and settled into their places in the herd. When they first went in they piled some weight on but after the first month it leveled out and now they are all looking amazing and thriving.

Those of you who have lobbed fatties out in big fields 24/7 at this time of year, do you have worries about frosted grass? I have always hayed out when frosty, so this would be new to me of having no other forage (I think they will put hay out if the grass runs out, but not on frosty November days).

I went to view it again yesterday and got to see a bit more of the herd dynamics in action and was happy with what I saw. Good big boss horses disciplining the younger ones robustly but not excessively, and young ones then going on to play together whilst others just minded their own business.

There is one long stretch of dreadful fencing, but she has said she would electric fence it off before I send him and look to replace the whole length.

I'd wait a few weeks to let the grass be eaten down and slow the growth down, no way would i put a fat pony anywhere it may stand any chance of getting fatter

Then go for it

Why I said about the weight tape. Mine has put on 56kgs and is only 13.2 since August when the rain came and made the grass grow! He was looking great!

The grass doesn't look lush and hopefully the herd will encourage movement. I think I'd give it a try, especially as you can bring him back home quickly, should you need to.
