To ask to borrow someones trailer to go to a show/fun ride once in a while? A lady who I'm quite close to up my yard has just bought a 4x4 with a towbar but has no trailer and says if we can borrow one we can go to a few shows in the summer.

Im only 18 so obviously can't get myself around and come from a non-horsey family. I know you can hack to shows but where the yard is situated and in terms of where shows are held around that's just not really possible/realistic. My horse is 15 and I'd really like to be able to do a bit more with her before she gets a bit older as I know she loves being out and about and I don't feel like I am doing her justice.

Quite a few people up our yard have trailers but the only lady who goes to local type shows is going to have the YO and her horse in with her and the others trailer will only fit her rather large horse in otherwise she said she would take me out with her, so I can't go with her either.

I've been riding a ladies pony at our yard (not paid) as it is has been very naughty and Im trying to get the fizz out of it a few times a week so it is rideable for her young daughter! She has a trailer which as far as I can see rarely gets used and I do want to ask her if we could borrow it every now and again but I really don't want to come across as rude or anything of the sort! I also don't know what the laws are in terms of borrowing a trailer. Its just SO frustrating not being able to get out and about with my mare I wish my family were into horses

No I don't think it would be rude to ask. It would be rude to get the hump if she says no but there is never harm in asking

I don't think its rude at all, you are helping her out with her horse. Why don't you ask if you could hire the trailer instead of borrow? This way it shows you are not expecting things for nothing. If she chooses to say she doesn't want anything for you using it then bonus. If she does want something for it at least you wont feel your taking the mick. Hope that makes sense & helps!!

I have a trailer and wouldnt think it rude of you asking, i would say no though as my trailer has been trashed once before by another persons horse i travelled, so dont be upset or take it personally if she says no

Not rude to ask. Just make sure you clean it out well and keep it tidy if they say yes.

Wouldn't be rude to ask but remember that the trailer owner can't hire it to you or she would count as a business and that would raise all sorts of horrors. And if you borrow it you'd need to have insurance because if it got damaged in any way, how would you get it mended or (heaven forbid) replaced? Or what if something broke on the trailer and your horse was injured? Who would pay the vets bills? Not as straightforward as you might think.

I'd suggest to the lady with the fizzy pony and trailer that as part of the training of the pony for her daughter, it might be an idea to get the pony out and about to other places including shows to see how it behaves travelling and in company and in new situations (as I expect ultimately daughter will want to compete) and suggest bring yours as calmer companion for travelling and accompanying at shows, you could offer to take the daughter round the lead rein classes perhaps? That way the other lady is driving you in her trailer, you've not borrowed it.
