...if I gave Prince the pug a buzz cut? The temperature is already up to 80 degrees this week, and he really slowed down on our afternoon walk today (fine for the first 30 minutes, but plodded after that). I know about pugs, flat faces in heat etc. but Stella wasn't even panting, and I can't help but feel less coat would make it easier for him.

Opinions, please. (Oh, and I always take iced water and a bowl on warm days.)

In general, I feel that their coats helps to isolate against the heat, how about beginning with shaving his legs, belly and between his front legs? Or must you either shave him completely or not at all?

I'm open to what's best for him. Forgive me sounding like a divot, but I hail from a Boxer family, then I had Stella, so have no clue when it comes to long-haired breeds or even breeds with double coats.

He did just fine this evening, and it was about seventy degrees, so I suspect the height of summer will mean lots of dawn and midnight walks.

As you say I suspect his problem comes as much from his face as coat. I would be careful in taking all his coat off, I have known dogs get sunburn when they have been clippe,Finny's idea of a "low trace" clip seems sensible. In the dim and distant past when we used to have hot summers my sheps didn't like walking in the heat of the day so we used to go out morning and evening. I also used to have a paddling pool in the garden for them to play in which they loved.:) You may find as he gets used to the weather he will cope better, a bit like we do.

Can you get him to lay on a wet towel? (apologies if you do so already!) They lose most heat through their undersides, so cooling them underneath is most effective. I think the trace clip idea is a good one too:)

On a less serious note, am I the only one who thinks 'shaving the pug' sounds a bit rude:o:D **makes serious effort to haul mind screaming and kicking out of the realms of smut**;)

Nah. Shaving the pug does sound a bit smutty :D

I'll see how Prince gets on, and in the worst case scenario, I'll trace clip. The dog park has two paddling pools, plus it's always in the shade in summer, so I'll make sure he spends plenty of time taking a soak.

Thanks for the advice.
