Well, my friend changed Ladys feed without telling me so just wondering if it would make a difference. I used to use alfa A oil, plus extra oil aswell, but i got told yesterday that Lady is now on normal Alfa A (i went to see this morning, its HI FI, not sure if theyre the same?) plus the oil
so instead of
Alfa A Oil,Build up cubes, Sugabeet, Joint Supplment, Garlic Powder and Oil.

She is now on
Hi Fi, Build up cubes, Sugabeet, Joint Supplment, Garlic Powder and Oil.

Would it make much of a difference? It's just, i dont want her losing any weight, especially as winter is fast approaching :(

Also, what would you do in this situation: Lady has an infection in her foot which she had when i got her but i treated it with Hydrogen Peroxide and it cleared up, but recently its came back, so im treating it again. But now the nights are getting darker and im at college and get home late, i asked a friend to treat Ladys foot for me, which she promised to do....This was about 2 weeks ago....But when i was there today i notcied both bottles were still full and exactly how i left them :/ I dont want to confront her incase she turns around and tells me to do everything myself....which i cant do because i cant drive to get to the field everyday :( Hmmm....What would you do?

How did your friend manage to change Lady's feed? Did she go out and buy it? What justification did she give?? In any case I would be absolutely *insert rude word* livid and even MORE p***ed off that she hadn't treated the foot as instructed. If it's been 2 weeks is Lady not lame? Ditch friend. She's no blinking good. As for the food, it probably doesn't make much difference but it's the principle of the thing.

hi fi is much lower calorific content so will lower her calories and going into winter if your horse is one who needs the weight i would put her back on alfa a oil. Also i would not be happy about either feed change or the non treatment of foot - is there no one else there who can do it?

I share a field with my friend, and she goes out and picks up food from the shop but we give her money to get it for us but she got different food instead and said we add oil anyway so might as well get different food. BUT i would rather have Alfa A Oil without extra oil, instead of normal Alfa A With Oil....
I can only tell if Lady is lame when i ride her because shes fine otherwise, i havent ridden her since i started treating again so i dont know if shes still lame :(
I completely rely on my friend as she is who takes me to and from the field, feeds Lady everyday for me and Supposed to be treating for me....

Sadly there's no one else who can do it, soon i will be able to drive myself so can go straight from college on most days...until then....I have to rely on others....

Bang out of order. If you pay, she should get what YOU want her to get- could she be getting cheaper food and pocketing the difference?? And as for not treating Lady's foot... don't even get me started on that. I think you need to have a VERY serious talk with your friend and make it absolutely clear that she's not to make ANY changes in Lady's regime without consulting you FIRST (why did she not do this??)
I don't want to alarm you about the foot, but PF had an infection that just wouldn't go away (she was only about 1-2 tenths lame at any time and I was poulticing daily) and it got into her pedal bone so they had to open up her foot at Rossdales and dig it all out...

I honestly dont know why she didnt tell me first :/ im guessing its because shes an adult and has more experience with horses so thinks shes knows whats best. :(
And im not sure about the cheaper food thing, dont think thats something she would do BUT we paid for a bag of Alfa A Oil for lady (and her horse) and a bag of build up cubes just for lady (her horse was on 16+ food) but she got one bag to share with her horse as well :/
This infection....i can see it coming, its going to get worse and worse if it isnt treated properly and soon Lady will have to be retired as she would be unridable :(

Adult or not, if she knew ANYthing about horses she would know not to leave that foot unattended. If it's a recurrent thing, I would be particularly worried. You really must put your foot down. Tell her she MUST buy the food you specify and if she won't look after the foot as requested then the vet's bill will be on her. I understand how difficult and awkward it must be if she's doing you a favour, but I would ASK straight out why she didn't get what you ask (had it sold out?) and emphasise how important it is that the foot be treated correctly.
When is your farrier next due? Have him check that foot; you might have to get x-rays to ascertain that it is an infection.

I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure that Alfa A oil is the most expensive of all the Dengie stuff so if you paid for it I think you may be being short changed. However it definitely has a much higher calorific value - Hi Fi is more for fatties :) As for the foot - completely out of order but I don't know how you should approach it if you are reliant on her. Maybe just casually point out that you noticed the bottles haven't gone down much and then tell her how worried you are about her being lame...

Very true.
It hadnt sold out, she told me last night we were wasting our money getting Alfa A Oil plus extra oil so changed feeds.....i dont see why we couldnt just stop buying the extra oil?
Her feet do need doing soon, hopefully my farrier will point out how important it is for her foot to be treated! :(

Stand your ground regarding the food. If necessary get an adult to have strong words. Good luck

Much as I'd be a bit annoyed about all this, you've kind of set yourself up for this by letting someone else do all the work - letting her buy the food and do the treating etc. I think that you have to keep your horse somewhere that you can get to it really, or have it on part livery, otherwise beggars can't be choosers and should not bite the hand that feeds! Sorry.

Or PM PF her email address - I think she's itching to have words with someone!

OP is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Until she's got her own transport, she's stuck. IMO there is still no excuse for randomly changing a horse's feed and neglecting said horse's feet. If it's not yet a welfare issue it could soon become one.

I told my mum how i felt and about the situation, she just told me i cant dictate to the friend because she will turn around and tell me to do it all myself (but thats not like the friend at all) and told her i dont want lady losing any weight because of the feed change and she said all we can do is get through this bag and if lady has lost any weight or whatever we will go straight back to AAO....which im not happy about but theres nothing i can do about it tbh :( :/

Your mum's right to a point; when someone is doing you a favour, it's a bit hard to dictate terms and conditions. HOWEVER, your money=your choice of feed. I'd be checking Lady's weight now with a weightape. They're not necessarily accurate, but you'll be able to tell if she's losing any weight. I'm still p***ed off about the foot! One does NOT take chances with anything like that....

You have my sympathy - after all the hard work you have put in, and not for want of trying, you are having a bit of a hiccup. What exactly is it you are treating with hydrogen peroxide? Is there an alternative you can use in conjunction with a hoof boot or anyone else who ould step in until you are independently mobile?

I admire your efforts and think this person really could do better. PF is right in perhaps getting an adult to step in (or even a vet to emphasize the importance of the hoof care) - or better still, give PF her address and she'll go round and wallop her on behalf of us all!

Don't get downhearted, you have done really well to get her looking so much better than she did.

Its some infection in her hoof which my farrier found, he cut a hole and told me to put HP in it and pack a bit of cotton wool in, i did this everyday and it cleared up but its came back now so i want to treat it again before itt gets any worse...
Its really upsetting me after all my efforts of getting her weight up etc this woman is risking everything ive done this past year. :'(
Every night i say "Have you done ladys foot tonight?" or "Was Lady ok today?" she'd always be like Yeahhh shes fiiineeee i did her foot for youuu
well....obviously not :/
