Been to see a fab new yard for my two horses, lovely stables, menage, post & rail fencing etc etc. The issue i have is that its £35 per horse per week for stabling & grazing (i currently pay £20 per horse per week), so quite an increase.

The difference between the two yards is that the one i am at now is not all year round grazing and the horses are split in two big fields i.e. mares & geldings.

The other yard is you have your own field (never been anywhere with this before so all new to me). I have a 16.2 IDx & a 15.1 and would be allocated 2x 2 acre fields, i would want to use one field for summer grazing & one field for winter, would i have enough grazing to justify the rather large increase in rent and to be able to not have to buy hay in every week??

personally id say yes as if your horses eat anywhere near as mine do you must be spending at least £21 a week in hay if theyre in all day? and again personally i think its far better for horses to be out than in

sounds good, and while it is an increase thats still a good price for DIY - although how did you find livery for £80 a month??!!!!I need to move there!!!

£80 a month is normal around here Suzie - not sure where OP or you are from but most yards charge about that. I pay £80pcm and for that I get my stable, my own field (although I'm slightly different as have two horses at livery, one of which is a stallion so I got given a 3 acre field which I split with electric tape so both horses have their own sides) The other liveries share a field. We also have a 65x25 school, although it is not floodlit.

The yard I am at is nice, but I would pay more if the yard had everything I wanted, eg, nicer school with floodlights, decent set of jumps, more storage etc.

The best thing to do is write down how much everything costs you now, the extra food and bedding etc, and how much it will cost you if you move. Then work out the financial difference. At the same time write down the pros and cons, eg, having own field vs having to share etc. If you want to ride one of your horses, will the other stay in a field on its own or would you have to bring it in too? Think about those sorts of practicalities. It sounds like a good idea to move to me, but really you have to weigh up whether the increase in price justifys what you will be gaining.

wow £80!??!? I'm from Berkshire think i need to move!! I get the impression £140/£150 is pretty standard round here, as it was in the midlands when i was up there!

Thanks for replies, i am in Lancashire and £80 a month is normal here too. Thanks for your suggestion Zoeshilloh regarding adding up my costs and i had thought of that, it will cost me about £900 a year more to move to the new yard.

The school is better at the new place as its bigger but the hacking is not as good as where i am now and although i do do some schooling (school is adequate when its not been raining heavily and it's floodlit where i am) we are 'happy hackers', it's the all year turnout that's giving me the thought.

Would 2 acres become a boggy mess when used for 6 months of the year for 2 horses ??? I rather suspect it would be.
